My third posting and I need a little help with my new/used purchase. This is a 05 2X4 2.7 manual reg cab. with 43K. I've been driving it now for a few days and I'm concerned with how it revs on cold starts. It starts up revving to about 2K on the tac and s-l-o-w-l-y revs down to just under 1K over about a minute or more. It sounds too loud to my ear. The truck runs well on the road but perhaps a bit rough in the idle. I''ve never owned a pickup so I'm getting used to the sound/feel of a larger engine.

Tonight I started it up and it did the usual high revs, i ran it for about 2 minutes as it reved down and I shut it off, waited a while (a few minutes of listening to the radio) then started it again. This time it seemed to start more normally, reving only to about 1400 then backing down to just under 1K over maybe 60 seconds.

I don't think the sparkplugs have been changed but I don't know if this has anything to do with it. I plan to tackle that soon.

Any other suggestions of things to check?

    Thnks for the help

    Steve.

Yep--Normal. The computer recognizes the engine is cold, so it tries to speed up the time it takes to reach normal operating temperature. :)

I don't know what is "normal". However, mine idles at approx. 1500 rpm at cold start-up and about 20 to 30 seconds (I'll try to remember to time it) it drops down to about 1100 rpm and then idles at about 650 rpm. Not sure that my figures are accurate but they are close to what I recall.

About the same as mine. The ECU senses the temp of the coolant in the engine block and thats what determines the cold start RPM's.

I noticed the high-rpm on cold start too (06 AC Auto SR5), mine goes to about 2200 for 10 seconds then takes another 20 seconds to slowly dial down to about 1000 before I drive away. All my other EFI vehicles have revved to only 1500 on cold start so this one seems a bit high, maybe normal based on other posts here. Not sure if disconnecting the battery will help anything with the computer reset... any ideas or feedback on this?
