Difference between 2003-04 2.4 liter vs '01?

I noticed that the 2003-'04 2wd taco with the 2.4 liter engine is rated 2 mpg better on the highway than the exact same '01 taco.

Anyone know what the difference is?

Upgrade possible?

What is not worth it? The question...

I'm just really curious about what is making such a huge difference? I figured there would be a few other MPG nuts like myself who might know the answer.

I don't think the drive-by-wire system came until the '05s

i dont think anyone said anything about transplanting an engine

at some point didnt the govt change the way they measure MPG?

could that have something to do with it?

thats why i was assuming a transplant since that seems to be pretty popluar around here.

----it could be many things but i am pretty sure they didnt change anything in the engine. It is most likely something like air intake exchaust vechicle weight (reduced it some how) but i am about 70% sure the engines are thye same.

Have you done the deck plate mod? That is the cheapest and most effecient intake mod for the first gens.
