Is my 4 banger worth building up to a long travel toy?

I have a 2005 tacoma 4x4 access cab 4cyl. Ive always wanted to built a prerunner truck. My issue is that, will i be at a disadvantage with the 2.7 as opposed to a 4.0? Dont get me wrong its great on the trails, but im not sure about running 33s and doing custom long travel as well as a cage, fuel cell, etc. this would be a project that i would put lots of time and money. is a 2.7 worth the trouble. ive seen the truck that total chaos built, theirs is a reg cab with a custom mounted 4.0. and its 2wd. I know you can get much more travel with a 2wd, would it be better to start with a 2wd tacoma v6. any input is respected and appreciated thanks.

do it and get the new turbo kit for the 4bangers from URD...i am pretty sure its a rotex kit

 

Would i just end up spending so much money trying to be as fast as the v6, that i could have just got one instead? sorry for all the questions but its a major decision for me at the time lol.

what's your budget like?
If you have the money, you'd probably do best starting with a 4.0 v6 pre runner and doing a supercharger.

 

You can make the 4 banger have some good power.

 

Dude, I must say I would like nothing more than to see that happen. Never once have I wished for a V6 while offroading. I have been in many situation where the extra weight could have really fucked me over

 

If you've got the money. Build it, it will save gas if you don't plan on towing, and get boosted for extra power.

 

You will be very happy with the 2.7, Just do some regearing if u need some more power. My friend has a fully built Toyota pickup with the 22RE (2.4L) and he keeps up really well with the bigger engine trucks, he is even running 35" tires. Since your planning on building this truck you can always do a engine swap down the road.

 

Pick the battles a bit, meaning if you avoid decelerating you wont have to speed back up. The v6 would obviously out accelerate it , but that doesnt mean the 4 cyl is a slow dog. Might be less wear and tear too. I want to see photos of your truck when you get the extended fenders, 12-14" long travel kit wheels and tires.

I seen a 2.7L 2wd regular cab 2007 with 13" long travel and 33" tires with out gears. the truck looked sick. Ill try and find it and post some pictures.

Your right there was a huge difference with the landing. That so sickkkk!
