need new catalytic converter

Hi all. 1st post since my intro on the new members page. I have 2006 2.7 access cab with a salvage title. The CC is junk. Took the down pipe off and dumped it. White insulation and powder came out. It rolls around like a baseball in there. So, after many searches and sites, I only found 1 replacement OEM downpipe from benchmarkhttp://www2.partstrain.com/store/?N=0&PN=5760

Has anyone gone this route or would it be best to cut the cat out and start welding.
I did a lot of reading about the codes that aftermarket cats can cause but the dealer (very helpful) is just way to high. $1700.00 with no labor.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

The truck has a salvage title. Warranty is not valid.

 

Thanks for the tip. I've never even heard of them until I started looking for a cat. I believe you are 100% correct in suggesting it. Thanks. I have been out of the loop on electronics since I stopped racing rally cars a few years back.

^ the 02 simulator will trick your ECU, but wont trick smoggers in Maine. you can get performance cats for a few hundred $$$ and have an exhaust shop install them for less than $100.

 

I checked that out. There is only one county that requires a OBD check as of 2001. No sniffers yet. I am going to a couple of exhaust places tommorow also. Now, the fostor's has just been opened.

 

Installed the new downpipe today. Very easy to do. I did use a new gasket at the joint just after the resonator. Also, I tapped out the 2 bolt holes at the top just to clean the threads. I did take 2 pictures of the new and old pipes.
What a difference in the truck. The old cat was rattleing around etc. After driving it for awhile I removed the charcoal filter from the intake. There was a better response in 1st,2nd and 3rd gears. Much happier now. We'll see how things go with the ECU and regarding a CEL down the road.

Here in California we have really strict laws and realisticly its not worth the fine.

 

The picture from a couple of posts ago shows the new downpipe. So far so good. It fit good. Its made by benchmark and I got it at partstrain.com. No CEL's yet. The truck is running good. I installed the AFE air filter and removed the charcoal filter. It was a noticable difference for me.
