4.56

Im putting in my 4.56 gear from a 4.30 ratio. Can anyone tell me if I will notice a huge fuel decrease?

 

if you are doing it because of oversized tires straining your 4 banger (as i'd imagine you are) then there shouldnt be a decrease, if anything i'd say you may see an increase!

 

hey, saw your location.... want to go 'wheelin up in the TSF on sunday with me and a few other guys off here? Saturday we'll be working on Chickenmungas truck- installing a lift and sliders, and then sunday we'll be going wheelin.

ah, well thats too bad. TSF= Tillmook State Forest. Maybe you've heard of Browns camp? Thats in the Tillamook State Forest, and probably where we'll be out wheelin.

Although i'd have to say, if there was a bunch of snow, a lot has probably melted since the weather has warmed so much over the last few days.

Are you doing the install yourself?

If not....then I wouldn't bother with the 4.56gears. Hardly worth the $$ for installation versus any gains you'll get. Go with something higher (numerically) to make it really worth the difference.

Going form 4.30 to 4.56 wouldn't make much of a difference, I would go with 4.88.

 

how would the 4.88's play out on gas for instance with some 33's?

 

I would venture to say it's really hard to say how the gas mileage will be affected. Every situation is different...... When you start lifting, adding modifications, different wheels/tires, other mods - you really can't compare from one person/truck to the other.

Are you more concerned with stomping on the gas and the truck actually accelerating quickly? Or are you more concerned about gas mileage?

And if you offroad at all and crawl in 4lo - the 4.88's will be a benefit in slower crawl speeds.

 

This is a generalization here:
the gears wont really change mpg if they put the r.p.ms back to stock based on bigger tires, the bigger tires / knobbier tires and the larger rotation mass do decrease mpg. Assuming you went to 4.88 my guess would be -2 mpg, thats based on an old dodge w regeared back in the early 90s and not a real accurate comparison.
