Again, I want to thank everyone that assisted me with my head gasket and not starting issue!

This isn't a major issue, but here goes. As most of you know I finally was able to get my truck running yesterday afternoon after chaning my first head gasket and not keeping adequate track of the original TDC timing. Which causes numerous other issues that I had to work through. Now when Is start the truck it will stall 2-3 times after about 5-10 seconds of running. If I keep the RPM's around 2k and wait about 30 seconds it will idle just fine. This only happens when you turn the truck off and try to start it again. It does it in both warm and cold conditions. Code P0336 is showing up...crankshaft position sensor. The connection seems to be tight and I didn't have this code before the tear down.

Check your FSM for the camshaft sensor. It will tell you how to check the sensor itself. If the sensor checks ok, then there is a possibility the distributor isn't quite right.

My other question (can't remember from the other thread) is did you replace the distibutor? If you did, is it a Denso?

The FSM says in this order:

    Check valve timing
    Check distributor instllation
Check and replace ECM (which I doubt is your issue)

You also may want to double check your grounds are tight.

The distributor is original, along with the coil and crank sensor. I will double check the grounds but I am pretty sure they are all tight...but we have all heard that statement before. I haven't verified the timing but it is just running so well. Why would I get a code for the crank sensor if the valve timing or dist is off?

check your timing.. even a tooth off would let it run for a little while and shut off...

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.

The ECU needs the crank sensor input to determine the timing. The ECU will electronically advance and retard the timing based on this signal. So if the timing is off from the start, the ECU cannot correct the timing for the conditions. When the ECU tries, it maybe putting the timing out of range and causing it to stall/die. It thinks it lost the crank signal.

It's easy for a motor to run smooth or sound good when the timing is off. Hook it up to a dyno and you can see the big difference even one or two degrees of timing adjustment can yeild.

As Dually said, check it with a timing light.

I will do that. So....being the first I've played with a timing light...I know the FSM states that the timing should be between 3-7 degrees. So lets say its at 10 degrees. That means it is 3 or so degrees advanced and I should rotate the distributor clockwise one tooth to get it within spec? Am I even warm here or way off base?

It should look like this. Get it as close as possible.

It should look like that at TDC on compression? That looks like its pointing between # 1 and # 3 if I'm not mistaken. Wouldn't it be sparking too late at that point since the distributor rotates counter clockwise? I do remember seeing that one tooth was different on the distributor and wondering why.

I'll give it a shot. Side note: my gas pedal used to stick the first time I pushed it and now it does it everytime. Probably a linkage adjustment huh.

Okay...I'm back for the holidays. I so far rotated the distributor towards me by one tooth and the truck wouldn't start. I put it back to where it was and havnen't had a change to try rotating it one tooth away from me to see if the check engine light will go out and it and idle without stalling.

The truck is running great now. I advanced the distributor one tooth and the check engine light went off, the stalling problem went away and its running great. More power than before as well!! Thanks again for all of the help!

I know this is an old thread but I am having a very similar problem. Can you post a little better picture or video of how you rotate and align?
