'09 4spd auto question

I needed a new commuter/small truck and bought the Toyota 4spd auto over the Nissan 5 spd auto. I test road them both, but not on the freeway. Now I am having a bit of buyers remorse. I love the auto, but I hate screaming the 4spd RPM's at freeway speeds. Why did Toyota not include an overdrive? At 65-75 mph the motor has to run at 3200-3400 rpm. I there any way to regear, or any tips? I only get 22 mpg (which is about the same mpg I got w/my 5spd '05 Taco V-6) and have to scream the motor on the freeway. What am I missing?

 

My 4 speed auto turns about 2400 rpm at 70 MPH. Do you have it in "3" or "D"?

At 65-75 I'm usually around 2300-2500

 

Personally, I drove the auto mostly because my wife is not good at stick. I felt it to be such a dog, slow in every gear, it felt like i could not get out of my own way. I feel that the way that these motors are tuned, they really need a 5 or 6 speed auto to really get some pep. I ended up with a 5 speed stick, and it really felt like a different truck.

While I sometimes feel the need for a bit more power, it does 98% of what I need it to. With some minor upgrades like exhaust ect, i think i can bring up that 1000-2800 rpm grunt it needs

 

It sounds like something is wrong. I'll have my dealership check it out. Thanks for the repiles.
