MPG - 2.7L Manual 4x2

Ok, now I am frustrated. I just got back from a trip to San Antonio. I averaged 70MPH and babied it all the way there and back. I only got 21 MPG!!!



To make matters worse, the best MPG I have gotten is 24! I was hoping for at least 26 (how I justified getting rid of my Accord - It got the same MPG 21/26).



One thing to consider, the truck does not idle steady. Even after it has been warmed up (without the AC running), it jumps around between 600 and 1000 RPM.

Anyone else have this issue?

I have 3000 miles on my 2007 since New Years Day, when I bought it. My first oil change is going to be at the dealer on Friday. I plan on talking to them about the rough idle and the depressing MPG.

What kind of mileage are the other 2.7(or 2.4) Tacomas getting?

We have the 2.7 Liter 4cylinder SR5 4x4 Access cab.
About 2700 miles on it.

Around town we are getting 20 mpg.
Freeway mpg is around 22 + which I am really happy about because we are coming from the LandCruiser world.

I drive with a pretty light foot keeping it around 70 on the freeway.

I wanted to get an old Landcruiser, but I want a diesel one. They aren't easy to find, and my wife will only let me get newer cars than the ones we have. It is one of her few requirements.

We got the Tacoma for the utility use combined with the same MPG we were getting out of my Accord. Unfortunately, we haven't seen that kind of mileage (26MPG on the highway).

Your wife sounds exactly like my wife. We still have our 82 FJ60 that she is always trying to get me to sell.

I put alot of research into diesel Landcruisers and still may eventually get one but for now we have the Tacoma.

No but I do notice that our FJ Cruiser seems to surge sometimes when I am stopped.
It has the V6 and the manual tranny.

I do not notice a rough idle though and in fact it seems much smoother that the Tacoma.

Yeah, it isn't really rough as much as it is just not steady.

as for the 26 MPG highway... I can't seem to get near that.

I'm with you. I purchased my 07 4 cyl on new year's eve and have just shy of 2K miles on it. My first tank of gas came out to about 18 MPG. My latest today came out to 21.12. Most of this is freeway driving.

I've been upset w/my mileage so ran a little test to see how speed/rpm might play into the equation. I usually run between 70-75 mph on the freeway and the 4 cyl runs some fairly high rpms. I thought perhaps the 4 cyl lost some efficiency at those higher rpms so I paid attention to my speed/rpms while driving and ran through a tank trying to stay around 65 mph BUT no change in MPG at all so ya, I'm kinda pissed off.

I note a rough idle after warm up when I'm sitting at a stop light/sign but no surge. It seems the idle drops about 7 secs after stopping and I get some roughness but dealer states it normal.

Hmmm...
I was going to comment that the formulas used to generate those MPG were made years ago and driving styles and speed limits have changed. I was going to suggest driving at 55-60 mph to see if you were able to reach the 26mpg.

The only time I ever reached the 38 mpg highway rating in my Saturn was when I drove on a highway going 55 mph.

I had a 98 Jetta TDI. That was one of the best cars I have ever had. In town it got 38 MPG. The best I ever saw was 56 MPG, but that was in the mountains. The little 1.9L Turbo Diesel put out enough power to make it fun to drive. Unfortunately, it was too small a car. I sold it to my bestfriend with 231,000 miles on it. It still looked and operated like a brand new car! It still gets around 40 MPG in town, and he drives it hard. I should never have sold it.

I was trying to wait and see if Toyota would bring the Hilux with the D4D engine to the states. I got impatient, and I figured a 4 Cyl Tacoma would do the trick. It has - with the exception of getting the decent mileage.

I've seen this in other threads - about the Tacoma and the idle surging at a stop. Mine does it too - but maybe only 3 or 4 times in my 1st 400 miles. Since I'm automatic, I feel a push and if I don't have the brakes firm, it jumps a little.

Idle at 600 is a little rough with the V6 - but it feels very "trucklike" as opposed to a problem.

Funny. That was exactly my reasoning. Plus I was going to look into the whole Bio-Diesel, SVO thing.

Mine did this too when it was < 1000 miles old. It happened on quicker stops, maybe when not idling before applying the brakes.

So it all went away after 1000? Makes sense - that's the mileage they give for the break in period.

Yes, I have not noticed it after 1k. Of course, I have also adjusted my driving style.

My 07 2.7L w/ AT 2WD Ext. Cab got 21mpg on it's 1st tankful. I'll filling 'er up tomorrow and take a new reading to see how it's doing. If I can get 22-24 mpg when it's broken in, I'l be happy. My last car an 03 MINI Cooper S only averaged 24mpg but required Super Unleaded. I can stand getting a little less MPG as long as I can use regular gas.
Posted gas figures on new cars are always higher than real life gas figures.

I guess I am just accustomed to my TDI. It said 41 MPG on the highway, but got more like 46 on average. My wife's Rav4 gets 30 MPG regularly on the highway, and it's a V6!

I am going to go get the first oil change today. I am going synthetic. Hopefully this will make a difference.
