My local grease monkey told me to help clean my engine (140K+ Miles), use 1q of tranny fluid in place of 1q of oil.....he found when replacing my timing chain I had alot of "sludge" in the engine. Has anyone heard of this type of cleaning? Will it hurt anything?

I would advise not doing that. Use a quality oil and change every 3000 miles. I have herd from an older guy to use tranny fluid in the gas tank helps clean it but I am not doing that either.

Just use a quality synthetic oil and it'll clean the sludge out after a few oil changes. Might end up with some leaks if the sludge is the only thing keeping old gaskets from leaking.

A quality oil or synth oil will clean your engine.

ATF is a high detergent oil. Viscosity about 10w. I used it on my old used beaters with great results. Shorten oil change interval to 2000m. Use DEXRON atf only. DO NOT USE ANY TYPE F FLUID IN THE ENGINE!

If it was meant to be put in the engine it would be called engine fluid.

Oddly enough, there's this product out there called engine oil...

As others have stated, increase your frequency of changes and use a synthetic. She'll clean up in a few changes.

i used atf in my 4.3L s10 pickup. atf is full of detergents that help clean the engine and also free up sticky lifters. midway between changes i would drain about a liter of oil and top it up with atf. gives the engine a good flushing over those last few thousand km before changing the oil. it wont hurt anything.

If it isn't any good, the only thing bad that could happen is you'd harm the engine.

    That's all........

I heard about doing that to, but I wouldn't do it. Maybe just use seafoam changeing the plugs after this is a must and just keep on using syn. oil.
