how many miles does your 4 banger get on one full tank??

Don't know how you pulled 26+ on the trip to Memphis at 80+ though. I hit the freeway at 80 and I'm down to the high 22s.

 

How much does the topper effect your MPG. I'd assume it hurt?

I had the truck for about 2 months without it.
No change... in fact, my worst highway tank (80+ in Texas) was the same as this last trip, 22, but it was like that for the entire trip, where my recent trip averaged 24 (swings from 26 to 22), and my wife was with me... which meant double the weight in luggage and more than double the occupant weight.

 

Current avg mpg..with the smaller tires was at 24.5 but started drivin in the city so it dropped

 

That would only be a tank and a half baseline for me.

 

Ya, and I average 1 a week, occasionally a 2nd depending on weekend shopping.

 

I am getting between 19-21 all city driving.
I find that shell gasoline give me 19 and change.. but Mobile gives me on average about 20.5 I drive 20 miles rt to work down a 3 lane busy road with about a million red lights, and I usually catch them all.

I have not taken my truck on a highway trip but I am leaving for Disney World in a couple of hours and I will be tracking it.

My truck is bone stock with 6k on it.

 

You're going to love your highway mileage IF you keep your speed under 65-70.
Crank it to 75 and you'll drop 2mpg.

 

376.9 on one tank driving to Disney World
131 miles were city back and forth to work
Rest was highway 75 mph we did get in traffic dead stop for a wreck for 30 minutes ac on the whole way 21.98 mpg
I have 305 and over a 1/4 left but won't be filling up till Tuesday will update then !

 

On the way home...I am going to set the cruise on 68 and see what I can get! I do have nitrogen filled tires or I'd bump them to 35 psi would that assist in getting more mpg

We usually take my wife's 10 accord and get between 29 and 30 mpg but the lighting (headlights are brighter and light more of the road and i dont have fog lights on the tacoma... yet) comfort and space made taking our double cab more enjoyable

 

Nitrogen is a scam if you paid for it.

The air that you are sitting in is 80% nitrogen.
Pure nitrogen is used in aviation and racing applications because it does not add oxygen to a fire. There are zero advantages to consumer vehicles.

 

Nope I was too cheap to pay for anything extra on my truck at the dealer I old them I didn't ask for all the crap they did to it and they can take it off... They had like 1250 in nitrogen spare tire lock and paint protectant seat protectant and tinted windows

I also noticed that I had less downshifting (oviously) but more importantly I noticed temps were lower and it was nice not worrying about some cop with a chip on their shoulder... Rich you were spot on with the milage...

 

My best tank so far is:
526 Miles / 19.515 Gallons = 26.95 MPG, 70% Highway driving.

Only mods done are a tonneau cover and tire pressures at 36 psi all around.
Truck is at about 3,500 miles or so right now. I figure most of engine break-in is already done. Overall, satisfied with my mileage. Coming from a Nissan Versa with 29-30 MPG average is not too bad a compromise.

 

Speed, as noted, kills the MPGs. If you can find a parallel route with lower speed limits that doesn't add significant time to the commute/trip, you can really appreciate some decent FE.

 

529.1 on 18.318 gallons for 28.9 mpg. Dragging my average down.

 

Except stop signs and traffic signals offset that savings and end up hurting more than the reduced speed helps.

Best to just stay in the right lane on the highway and keep it a bit below the limit. 55-65 (indicated) seems to be the sweet spot.

 

I just got my L4 Tacoma. After 3 fill ups I'm averaging 21.3. It's a 5 speed 4x4 reg cab. I bought an ultra gauge and have gotten up to 23.6 for an average (on the ultra gauge). I have a fuelly account but I don't know how to put it in my posts.[

 

You are right of course that lights/stops hurt. However, I was able to take the family down to Myrtle Beach last April taking interstates the whole way down. On the ride back, I took the state highways (with lights in the urban areas) but where the speed limit was 10 MPHs on average lower. The trip back yielded better mpgs even with the urban area lights. For the most part, you can get a decent pace set up and only hit a third or so of the lights (guestimate on my part). MPGs went up by 4 in the MDX (about 15%). But to your point, you need to know the ins/outs of the alternate route. A steady foot and lower highway speeds might be the better choice.

PS - For a good part of the ride back (to for that matter) I drove off-peak; early morning driving while the traffic was minimal and lights tend to stay green longer on the main road.
