How many miles is on your 2.7?

135,000 on my 04 RC. Front brake pads and a muffler. I'll guess the muffler is because I'm in the rust belt, maybe. Happy to have the last of the first Gen's . Does anybody think it is worth it to change to synthetics at this point? I've already changed diffs, transfer and tranny to synthetics.

 

Looked down at red light yesterday. Had it like 3 months, no problems except the pos clutch Toyota put in it, at least some people think Toyota offered diesels

TOPOMICH04COMA definitely worth it to switch to synthetics...been using them for decades...and don't believe the old tales about synthetics causing leaks...leaks will only occur if the vehicle was neglected in the first place.

Early synthetics were much higher detergent content than conventional oils, so older engines that were "sludged up" would be cleaned by the synthetics and the result was (the revelation of existing) leaks.

When synthetics were introduced, non-detergent oils were commonly available, and like the current resistance to 5w20 and 0w20, many "old timers" stuck with it (but didn't hesitate to try Amsoil because it was 'Murican).

 

The issue with switching to synthetic motor oil is doing so on a high mileage vehicle. The head gaskets get lubricated for years with conventional motor oil and when you switch to a synthetic, you will get leaks, unless you change your head gaskets when you make the switch.

I read this on a website a while back, and while I certainly don't do any justice to explaining WHY this happens, I have to tell you I didn't believe it, but I found out the hard way - It is True.

 

I buy all my vehicles used, usually with 200k or more. I always switch them to synthetics with NO problems. IF the vehicle has been reasonably maintained, ie fairly regular oil changes...there has been no problem.

Bottom line is...as long as you change your oil you will be ok.

I just like the benefits of synthetics. I put lots of miles on my vehicles, usually without many problems. I think synthetics help.

 

Hmmm, I have 15k also and 2 years older, I must be doing something wrong. Plan on keeping this truck 20+ years, unless a diesel emerges.

 

Well I haven't had my truck too long but it just rolled over to 108k today which is nothing for a 2.7. My truck in high school was a work truck and had over 320k miles on it and is still going.

 

05 w/160k miles no major work done. Just keep up maintenance and she'll run foreverrrrrr

 

I have a 2001 xtra cab with 68,750k miles

 

2000 Tacoma 213k on it

Parts changed:
Clutch (turns out it wasn't wore out)
Rack and Pinion (boot ripped and then seal broke)
Power steering pump (changed with the r & p)
Rear axle bearings and seals @ the wheels

About to change out the exhaust manifold to a header. Got the infamous cracked header these motor where known for.

LCE or Rock Ripper headers?

Couldn't ask for a better truck, dad had the first four and I have had it since. The truck get off roaded and at times pulls twice its weight down the road.

 

im gonna go with the 2001+ header when i go to do mine one of these days

 

I have an LCE sitting in the box waiting for spare time. The equal length runners are supposed to be better for torque.

 

On a 4-banger, Tri-Y is really best.

And for Toyota 4-bangers, I have a lot of faith in LCE. They've been building great Toyota engines since the 18R.

 

My 2003 Toyota Prerunner has 224K miles on it and shows no signs of stopping. The engine runs very strong, no signs that it is tired. Love the fact that it has a timing chain that I never have to change. Original starter, alternator, water pump.

Only the power steering (presumably the pump) exhibits a bit of a whine in cold weather until it warms up. The power steering fluid has really never been changed.

 

153,000-5 speed Manual-only thing i have done was replaced cracked manifold, and still has the original clutch!

 

Got my 2011 used July 2012 with 8000 on the odometer. It now has 50000 on it. Still going strong. I had originally hoped to get 200k in ten years out of it. If things keep going the way they are it will be closer to 400k.
