timing chain

Does the 2.7 liter 4 banger have a timing chain or a belt?

 

chain, which means no replacement

 

you will have to replace it when the guards wear out.

 

yeah i'm glad they finally got rid of belts on most engines nowadays...it was like $500 to get that thing changed due to the labor costs...most all engines since about 2003-2004 use chains that don't need to be replaced now..a few of them still use belts though

 

Anything other than a 4cyl pretty much has a belt...

 

what about the 4 liter?

the 5vz does have rubber band timing action but the new 1gr and 2tr have chain

 

Im saying in general... Most cars these days seem to come with a belt.

 

idk the newer ones are kinda moving toward chains...like just coming out kine...

there benefits start outweighing the costs now

They're moving away from belts now. Can't think of any domestic cars in the last ten years that have a belt on anything. Older toyota v-6's have belts, so do VW/Audi v-6's. For the most part though they seem to be going away so they can hook up the VVT-i system.

 

8th Gen Accord 3.5 V6 has a timing belt. The 2.4 I4 that was in my Accord had a timing chain. It was one of the reasons I chose the 4 banger.

My wife brought home a VW Touareg from work that was company owned and they wanted to sell it. After doing some research the 4.2 V8 had a timing belt and required to be changed at every 80k miles or 5 years and I read it was about a $1400 job. Needless to say my wife took it back and came home with her RAV4.

 

My friend's mom took home a used Kia from a dealer (you probably know what happened already), and 20 miles into driving it, the timing belt snapped on the freeway and messed up all sorts of shit. I forgot exactly what happened but the engine was completely beyond repair and the car totalled.

I like my chain .

But LC Engineering had a hard time with getting power with a chain on their 1000+ hp turbo build engines, so they made some proprietary "billet belt drive"...probably cuz belts weigh less? Can anybody explain that?

 

Off the top of my head - Ford Focus.

Belts are still pretty common on 4 cyls, but not as common as they were 10-20 years ago.

 

well let me clarify...toyotas, hondas, and i think nissans all come with chains that don't need to be replaced now...talking about new cars not old ones...chains are standard now on all of their engines...no more belts other than like the serpentine belt
