Largest Tires to clear on 09 2WD Base Reg. Cab

I'd like to put some larger rubber on my 09 2WD Base 5 lug Regular Cab and perhaps some different wheels. I really don't want to lift it, just bigger tires to fill the wheel wells and add a little more ground clearance. I'm thinking 235/75/15" or maybe a 16" wheel. I'd like to run a 7" wide wheel, will it clear the caliper on these trucks? I'm a old guy and would like a wheel which looks old school and sits under the fender w/o excess stick-out. Are the factory wheels hub-centric? An alloy wheel would be great as long as it's something I can run year around, so clear-coat might be a given.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

I am currently running on my 08 base 5 lug 4 cyl. 235/75/15 And i have no issues with fitment. The tires fit on a stock rim and they look good and add about an 1" of clearance from the ground. The only issue i had was power was reduced for a i do a lot of highway driving, but in the city and didnt change much. I am running BFG All Terrains and they are great

Thanks for the confirmation & help, I plan on re-gearing to a 3.73 or 4.11 to gain the power back once tires are switched. Stock wheels are 6" between beads, right?

Yeah, i dont know what bead spacing is sorry but if you mean the width of the wheel, yeah its 6". The tire recommends a 6.5" minimum width wheel, but i have had them on for over 30k and no issues, the place i had them installed also said this wont be an issue. I re-geared my truck to a 3.73 and it is a little better than it was stock. I am averaging aroung 23-25 mpg, so it wasnt that much of a loss. the only issue is your speedo and odometer are f*ed lol. You just have to find that out and always keep it in mind. When the speedo says 90 im really at 80, and thats about 3ooo rpm, which isnt bad doesnt hit the powerband yet unless you step on the gas hard. If you plan on re-gearing i would like for a used third member from like a pre-runner or sumthing, thats where i got mine off of, just make sure it doesnt have an e-locker. Anyways hope this helps.

i have a 225 75 15 on mine with no probs. dont notice much difference in power, at least i dont.

Thanks for the info and pics guys. Not sure how things are measured now although when buying wheels back in the day we considered the distance between the beads the wheel width. I checked out some wheels sites and a few are measuring edge to edge so maybe things have changed. I'll have to look into this further.

Cappy, did you get your rear from a V6 Pre-Runner, I think the 4 cylinder Pre-Runners came with 4.11's

I've got 265/75/16s Kumho on mine and then fit well. Look better then the stock tires also.

Thats the wonderful thing with these trucks theres about 5 different variations of the third members. I got mine off of a 6 cyl. pre runner their third memebr is a 3.73, if you get it off of a 4 cyl. pre-runner it will be 4.11, im not sure if the tranny will affect that setup it may. So if i decide to regear again i will get it off a 4 cyl. pre-runner. Funny isnt it?

 

I put some 235/75 R15's Goodyear Wranglers on my 06' 2WD. There is plenty of clearance for a larger tire but I don't think any bigger of a tire would fit on the rims. I haven't noticed any loss in power but I installed a CAI around the same time. Gas mileage wasn't affected as I got 25 MPG on my last fillup.

I wouldn't go with a 16" wheel mainly because the cost of tires is going to go up dramactically. Stick with the 15" stock wheels and go with the 235/75 R15's. I put 235-70-15s on my 5 lug. It made my speedometer agree with my GPS. It also locked down the handling on windy bridges.

I may have lost a little bit of power on the Interstate but not enough to matter.

Mileage is consistent.

 

the largest tire I had before the lift and on stock steelies was 30x9.5

By sticking with the stock 15" rims w/ 235/75 or 235/70 tires the tires should still stay inside the fenders.

I went with 235/70/15s also...Goodyear Wranglers. Looks great..fills out the wheel well nice and even looks good around stock wheel. However, does anyone know if my odometer will be a little off now and how I would fix that if so?

Check your odometer with mile markers on the interstate or with a GPS. Do several tests at say 10 miles with different sets of mile markers to verify the results.

There are devices that you can add to correct the odometer but usually just a correction percentage will do.

 

Using the tire guide tutorial on this site...it says the base tire to the 235/75/15 is about 7% diff. Question: If the speedometer is 7% more is that an exact correlation to the odometer?

 

My guess is it will read about 4 MPH high since stock speedo tends to read 3 MPH low.....
