2.7l valve job

I took my 2000 Tacoma Extended cab 4wd with a 2.7l engine to a local shop due to loss of power, bad gas mileage and check engine light. They determined there was low compression in the #2 cylinder due to a stuck valve. They estimated $2000 for a valve job and machining of the head. Does this sound accurate? I found a brand new short block online for $2000 with free delivery. Are they trying to take me or am i missing something? Any info would be helpful.

 

That price is WAY too high. Also you could remove the head and take it to a machine shop to get the work done, that would save you some money.

Times are tough everywhere, the bottom feeders try to find suckers behind every rock.

I'd push a couple cans of Sea Foam through it before doing anything.

I am tearing down the engine in the driveway now but still deciding weather I should order a rebuilt head for $375 or take mine to a machine shop and have it re-one. Does anyone know an estimate of what they charge for valves / machining?

 

It cost be $130 for a total breakdown of my head, bead blast and valve seals. For a 3 angle valve job, new seals and maybe a couple valves should only run 400..

 

I would test the compression myself or get a second opinion before I tore into it. You can get a inexpensive compression tester at Harbor Freight.
