I believe that warning light comes on when you have around 2.5 gallons left. Given driving styles, terrain, weather, vehicle configuration, type of fuel blend, it could mean you have to find gas in the next 50 miles. As noted, running it to the bottom isn't generally recommended. But it's good to know what you have left given your own situation so you can make a better decision. Given my configuration, winter blend, colder temperatures, I would be able to manage about 50 miles. In the summer with regular gas, maybe 60 miles. However, I only use that to make buying decisions relative to where I'm at when the light comes on. If I know my regular service station is cheaper and within 20 miles, I might wait. If price is comparable, I'll buy and be happy.

 

I've never seen the light come on. I fill up between 3/4 & 1/2 tank.

 

My light comes on with about 4 gallons left so I can normally make it at least 70 miles

 

On my v6 Taco, I've noticed my fuel light to be pretty conservative. I can usually get another 50-75 miles after my light turns on which is equivalent to 4-5 gallons of gas. I understand it's best to not drain the tank though as you're likely to clog up the fuel system with particulate settled at the bottom of the tank. Good luck

 

After seeing the 4/5 gallon reserves, I got to thinking that I should have noted my tank size in case it matters - 18.5 gallons with the 2.5 gallons left in the tank when the light comes on. Conservative estimate of 50-60 mile travel distance (2.7L 4x4).

 

It comes on with 4 gallons left in the tank, says so in my owners manual anyhow.

 

Thanks. I'll have a look at mine next time in the glovebox. My fuel gage and light are very routine: about 105 miles per 1/4 tank (spring/summer) and light comes on after 16 gallons consumed.

 

Ive driven 70 miles before with my light on, its always more of an adventure..

About 90 miles the time I broke my old record for most miles/tank.
But I don't often see the light, I usualy fill it up before it comes on.
My record on my 4Banger 4x4 with a 3" lift, stock tires & shell.

That's cutting it close, you were probably literally running on fumes haha

 

That was doing 75MPH most of the time on 7 70ish mile round trips to work. Going from 4400' (old house) to over 4500' and down to 4100' (work) and back with a lot of ups & downs in the middle.
Maybe after I do the sail mod or I find a 500 mile flat stretch of freeway.

I always have 4 gal in a 5 gal can in back.

 

I could care less on driving the most miles from one tank. I will not subject my fuel pump to those conditions. Electric fuel pumps are not cheap or easy to replace. 1/4 tank is as low as I go.
