different gearing? auto vs manual

I have a stock 2014 reg cab manual 5 speed, my buddy has a stock 2013 reg cab auto. I understand they both have the same diff gears? (4:10s) If so is the final gear different in the two transmissions?
we did a little experiment see below:

His auto at 2000 rpms reads 62-63 on speedo
My manual at 2000 rpms reads 54-55 on speedo

note: they both have the same tires etc..

 

I believe it's 3.31 for the manual & 3.58 for the automatic.

 

On the 5 luggers, yes, but on the six lugs they're both 4.10.

OP, that sounds about right, the overdrive on the auto is a fair bit taller.

If you account for Toyota's intentional speedometer error, on the 5 speed with stock tires, 55 mph = 2150 rpm.

 

The manual has .81 overdrive while the automatic has .71.

The difference in overdrive would be .71/.81 = .88 or 88% of speed at same rpm.

Your auto at 62 mph times .88 = 55.6 mph with stick just like you found.

 

So is this why these guys are saying the auto gets better fuel mileage.
The auto has a taller final in the trans?

 

Depends on speed, the stick is always at a fixed speed, the automatic will drop out of converter lock and maybe even drop into 3rd. In the right flat steady state conditions the auto can beat the stick, but depending how you want to drive the stick will do better. More often the stick will beat the auto with the I4.

 

The EPA ratings for the 2012 regular cab 2 wheel drive Tacos bear that out:

EPA city/highway fuel economy:

21/25 (2WD, manual)

19/24 (2WD, automatic)

 

Now to add a question to my original...

Both of these trucks are presently running stock 245/75/16. Using the tire size calculator. http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php?tires=245-75r16-285-75r16 in "theory" I should be able to run 285/75/16 & still be geared slightly lower than the automatic..?

based at approx 2000 rpms
manual with 245/75/16 = 55 mph (stock size)
manual with 285/75/16 = 59.26 mph

Auto with 245/75/16 = 62 mph (stock size)

In reality I will most likely be running 265/75/16...
