Today I replaced my engine and cabin air filters.
This is probably pretty easy and obvious to everyone on the site but figured I'd write it up just for fun.
It's crazy to me the dealers charge around $60-$80 each to install these for you.
So I found a Toyota dealer selling both on ebay for $34. I showed the ad to my local dealer and they price matched! (That's $22 off what they wanted before!)
    028F155F-E263-491D-9A23-10AFCC9328AA_2fdaef13a24e05dc86d10f577f543b166a92eb39.jpg

So the cabin filter is located just behind the glove box.

Press the tabs inward and the glove box will lower about an inch.

Next disconnect the glove box "shock absorber" by pressing the tab and removing.

That will drop the glove box completely to reveal the filter housing.
Next push down on the 2 tabs and the filter will be there.

Hmmm. I'm pretty sure it was time for a new one,

Next put the new filter in as directed.

Then reverse the steps to close it all up.

Now for the engine air filter.

Open up the 2 metal tabs

The tabs in the back can take a little "shimmying" to open the cover all the way

Yep I must live in the desert!
Lastly closing this all up. The tabs in the back need to seat just right to close all the way.

Ok I hope this helped someone save some money and time at the dealer.

    Thanks for the write up.
Dealers will price match you but theyre not going to look for a lower price for you.

Great cab filter write-up. Hope its similar for my 1st generation, as I need to to expunge the odor of ancient dust from my vehicle!

Nice pics and a great write up. Kind of comforting to see that someone else does it just like you do. Have done these chores a few times in the last 6 years, but enjoy doing things on the truck, no matter how trivial. The sad part is there is so little normal stuff the average guy can do, without all the "special tools"

Great writeup, I've been changing the engine air filter on my wife's Yaris for years. Its almost exactly the same as my 2.7 Taco.

At only $20 for a OEM filter, it makes you want to change it every 10k. I just hit 15k on my pickup. I just changed the filter, and it was filthy. I drove too many gravel roads this hunting season, lol.

I bought the lifetime oil change with my pickup, and the service manager provides cabin air filters (if needed) and installation for free with an oil change.

So, did the 30K maintenance, after the oil change I replaced the air filter as the maintenance schedule calls for, the old filter doesn't look quite as dirty as the OP's. Maybe I could have got another 5K or 10K out of it?

You don't have to drop the glove box to change the cabin filter on the 3rd gens. Sweet!

That's what I'm wondering?????? Does my 2004 4X4 RC even have a "cabin filter"? I have never changed one and didn't even know it existed if I do have one. If no one tells me yeah or nay I guess I'll have to root around under there and see if I do.

Thanks! That'll save me from searching for something that doesn't exist.
