Hi! I'm currently a GM owner (I know, don't beat me to death) soon to be looking for a Tacoma. I had an older little Toyota truck back in the late 80's. I loved that little truck. I see they have increased in size since then. I don't really know the year I'm after and have joined the site to get a little more knowledge about the model years, body style changes, engines, ect.. My wife and I will probably end up buying used, so I'll research them carefully before making a purchase.

I have noticed (depending on mileage) that the Tacoma's price hovers around the price of my own, if both are around the same year. Mine being a '05 Silverado Duramax Diesel Crew Cab 4x4 fully loaded, makes it kind of hard to swallow. But what that does tell me is that the little Toyota holds its value quite well, but is still an expensive little bugger.

Hi Garrett!

The Tacoma got bigger in 2005... known as the Second Gen. Tacoma. The bed got deeper and wider in 2005, so the load carrying increased. My 2005 & 2010 5 ft. bed holds as much cargo as my 2001's 6 ft. bed held.

There is a regular cab, an 'Access Cab', and a Double Cab (4 door). The DC (double cab) has a standard 5 ft. bed (overall length close to Access Cab with the 6' bed)... or an optional 6 ft. 'long bed'... but that makes the truck longer than all the other models.

If 4WD is your desire, then you got it available with all Tacomas. Only the OFF ROAD TRD has a locking rear differential. All other Tacoma models (SPORT TRD, SR-5, LIMITED, Base) have the same traction choices available... An exception is the SPORT TRD from 2005 to 2008 which had a mechanical limited slip rear differential.

In 2009, all Tacomas were fitted with TRAC (limited slip) and VSC (vehicle stability control). Only the OFF ROAD TRD since '09 has ACTIVE TRACTION CONTROL (A-TRAC) which is an advanced super-limited slip that works in low range 4WD and provided the traction very close to have front and rear locking differentials. So, if you are thinking of doing some intense four wheeling, do consider the Off Road 4WD Tacoma. The only way to have more traction than A-TRAC and your rear locker is to add an after-market front locker... The high cost of a front locker may not justify the addition if you already have A-TRAC or even just the rear locker.

But not to worry about not being well liked. Those other domestic trucks are what made a lot of us turn to our Toyotas.

(Even though my Ram was one sweet vehicle that never gave me an inkling of an issue. I miss my Ram. )

David, thanks for that information. It may take me a while to soak that info in, as I don't know many of the features just yet, but I'm sure I will get it figured out. Thanks for taking the time to explain some of that to me and I will use it to refer back to when doing my research. Thanks!

babytruck, I must say, you have a good point there. I never really thought about it that way. I don't feel so bad now!

To be truthful, I really haven't had much trouble with the truck I have, or at least not until the other day. Thank goodness it was something I could fix on my own without getting raped by the stealership. If I can do it myself, I'm all over it. Unfortunately, I'm getting at an age where I don't enjoy laying on my back looking up at the underside of an engine. Or for that matter, climbing on top of one (like my truck). Which is all the more reason I'll appreciate a Tacoma.

We had originally purchased the truck to do some RVing when my wife retires, but we decided that it wasn't in our best interest to do so. I think my wife realized traveling in that manner could get quite expensive, and we really need to watch our pennies so not to come up short before drawing ssi. It's a good thing I'm quite a few years younger than her. I can always make that extra money.

Anyway, that's the reason we'll be looking for something smaller. I have always loved the little Tacoma's. I've always admired the Tacoma's and look forward to purchasing one in the future.

Actually, I think the bigger size is good in a way. Vehicles have gotten bigger, taller and heavier over the years. If it was still a dinky truck, your life could be at risk -- seriously. I think I'd rather be in something with a little heft. After all, that is what I'm used to...

I sure do miss that early model Toyota I had, though.
