Ranger Bed Extender on 2nd Gen?

Hi all - Has anyone attempted to mount a late model Ford Ranger OEM bed extender on a 2nd gen Tacoma? I have my 2005 Ranger extender up on Craigslist as I have a Tacoma ordered...now I am second guessing myself and think maybe I should pull it off until I try to mount it.

A friend just gave me an extender from his 2003 Nissan Frontier. It seems to fit just fine. I had to order the brackets and the strap kit for the Tacoma, but havn't come in yet.
Most if not all factory extenders are made by Amp Research.

 

Thanks Fagro...that is good news! Guess I'll remove my craigslist ad and hope it works when my truck arrives.

 

I'm pretty sure you are correct...perhaps just the mounts vary in length. If it is only an inch or two wider I might be able to adapt with Ford mounts and some washers for length on the mounts.

 

the taco bed is like an inch or two wider near the tail gate if that matters to ya.

I might be able to work with that...I'll investigate whether it is actually the same bed extender. Here is a pic of it on my current truck and a pic of the connecting mount:

 

Ah, ok...thank you. Toyota's OEM hardware certainly won't work then...I still have the mounts, so I'll have to see if I can make Ford's mounts work.

Many of the bed extenders have interlocking tubes that can be adjusted in length. I got a bed extender off a Nissan Titan and was easily able to shorten the width to fit the Tacoma. Check it out,

 

Thank you for the reply. Mine is OEM and specific to the Ranger w/no adjustments...it is slightly flexible, so it can be adjusted a bit when hooking into the pins. I am still waiting on my truck to arrive (Carmax says 21 days, which puts me a week out still), but I will hopefully be able to rig something up. I'll put an update in this thread.

 

Well, the answer to my original post in one word is "no." I could not quite make it work. I suppose with fabrication skills and proper tools I could do so, but too much for me.

 

Further update and correction...I think I can make it work. Come to find out that the bolt extending from the bed of the Ranger (OEM mounting equipment) is actually a striker bolt...I just bought some longer ones, and will try to mount with nuts attached inside the tail lights plus some washers to get the perfect length...I'll let you know how it goes.

 

Ok, the above method worked...required 5 washers for the fit.

Thanks! Saved some bucks as I need an extender for my extended camping trips (especially with the toolbox). I always liked the finish of this extender anyway.

 

Ok, these measurements are approximate:

Bed to top of bolt: 8 3/4"
Bed to bottom of bolt: 7 "
Diameter of bolt head: 3/4"

In the first picture you can see that it is certainly wider than the bed of the Ranger. BTW, you could easily lower it another 1" and still have clearance (I think I mounted it a bit too high, but it works fine).

They are called door striker bolts (used for auto doors). I can't remember the exact link, but I measured the length needed by placing the extender in the center of the tailgate. I picked them up at the auto parts show. They were not quite long enough, so I just added washers to each make them reach further. I bolted the threaded part of the bolt through holes I drilled into the taillight housings (see pictures above for location).

Again, I don't know the exact length but it looks like this:

Friction, what did you do about the pin bolts; how did you make them work?
