How did the shop selling you the shell determine the correct color to paint the shell?

When I got mine, they asked for the manufacturer's paint code. They get the canopy from their dealer, and they paint it in the shop.

paint code sticker is inside the drivers door sill area, just had my shell painted, they did a perfect color match even without my truck being present. Some taco colors have 2 to 4 variations of the color so the ones with more variations they might want the truck there to get it perfect.

Another option for anyone who wants their canopy a contrasting color. My Taco is red metallic & I did not want a red canopy. So I took it to a auto paint store & asked them to scan my grey grill(or whatever) with a handheld device most paint stores own. Then they plug that scanner into a PC via USB & print out the color code on a sticker. I gave that to my canopy dealer with my order. It came back a perfect match...below is my setup.
