A$$hole Damaged My Shell

The asshole is me...

I was storing my shell for the winter. As I hoisted it up to the joists in my garage, I raised it unevenly and it slid off the PVC crossbar through which one of the ropes was threaded. The shell struck the concrete floor front edge first, and then, of course, the back end slid off its crossbar and the remaining weight of the shell landed on top of my plow-frame. The front end of the shell was fractured at both corners and the lights on the plow were "tweaked" a bit.

Overall, I'm pleased with the way things turned out:
My son, to whom I was giving a lesson in Advanced FuckUp, was not injured.
I had pulled the truck out of the garage as soon as the shell was a few inches off the side rails, and the truck was not injured.
The shell's window glass and rear hatch are intact.
The shell was only six feet high when it fell. It could have been nine feet high. It's good to fail early.
The plow lights are easily fixable.
Repairs to the shell will be...less than the price of a new shell.

I thought I had a pretty good system for storing my shells, but it seems that I was simply lucky to not have an accident in the past. I never claimed to be an engineer, and I proved it. A better hoist system is in the future and for now, the shell will sit outside on a trailer.

I'm not hunting sympathy and no one should feel sorry for me. I screwed up and learned a lesson. I learned that if I'm going to fuck up, I need to have my wife close by so that I have someone to blame other than myself.

 

Bad..... but not to bad. It's fix able AND nobody got hurt

Well, at least the a$$hole has a sense of humor about it.

Could you share your hoist system, for a "what not to use" for others. I have a rope/pulley system that I haven't used yet. It was there from the previous owner.

 

That's the way I see it. I'm not upset about it and view it as just another story to tell.

Smart grasshopper waited to see how I reacted. Then we had a good laugh and discussed what went wrong.

 

Lol my buddy did this to his jeep top. It's fixable glad nobody got hurt!

 

I have a 3-sheave double pulley rope hoist attached just below the rafters. I wrap two nylon lifting straps under the edges of the shell and fasten them to the hoist. I raise the shell up to the joists and secure it with two doubled nylon ropes strung from joist to joist. At least that is what I did with my Ford shells.

As the Toyota shell is only half the weight of my old shells, I skipped the hoist part of the operation and just slid a couple pieces of 1 1/2 in. PVC with elbows under the shell. I ran the ropes through the tube, over the joists, back through the tube and over the far joist. Pull the ropes and the shell goes up. Easy. Pull the front rope faster than the back rope and the front PVC slips out from under the shell. Very easy.

I took a shortcut. It worked, but not very good.

 

lol I have laughed without waiting for a reaction once... needless to say... I wait for the reaction and determine whether or not to laugh there or sneak around the corner to laugh.
