A mass crash involving £2.6 million worth of supercars may have been caused by speeding, police believe.

Eight Ferraris, three Mercedes and a Lamborghini were caught up in the 14-car pile-up on a motorway in western Japan.

Police are now reportedly investigating whether drivers were speeding along the Chugoku Expressway in southern Honshu when the incident happened on Sunday morning.

Reports from Japan suggest eyewitnesses saw drivers zooming past at speeds of around 90mph, nearly double the 50mph speed limit.

It has been suggested that one driver lost control on the wet surface while trying to change lanes and hit a barrier before spinning back across the road.

The luxury cars travelling behind slammed on their brakes but couldn’t avoid colliding as they tried to avoid smashing into the first driver.

A 36-year-old eyewitness, who had been driving in the opposite direction, told the Daily Yomiuri: “The cars were making a tremendous noise.”

Ten people – five men and five women – were taken to hospital with minor injuries but no one was seriously hurt.

The damage caused to many of the vehicles was thought to be so severe that they will have to be scrapped.

Video of the crash aired by NTV, a major national network, showed several smashed, bright red Ferraris cluttering the road.

The supercars were being driven from Hiroshima to Kyushu along the Chugoku Expressway, which had to be closed for six hours while clean-up crews removed the wreckage.

Two humble Toyotas were also caught up in the wreck.
