this may be unrelated but have you ever noticed when you go into a gear from neutral it kind of sounds like a loud clunk? i have driven other manual cars/trucks but i have only noticed it in my tacoma.

24* isn't very cold. Did you have 4WD engaged recently? Maybe the drivetrain is binding? I bound up the drivetrain on a previous Taco, and it took a bit of work to get it undone. No harm done, but I was sweating for a bit.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out. I had a bearing issue with my front diff after gears due to an install error on my part. I ended up with the shift fork for the ADD collar on wrong side and burned a side bearing up. If it turns out to have anything to do with your TC which I doubt let me know as I have a spare one.

    I don't get it.

All I did was replace his windshield wipers.

Took me a while to cram them in there though...

I have noticed that a few times. I figured my timing of rpm's when shifting was off a little? normally it shifts smooth with no clunk.

Nah - it was the wipers. Known issue with Toyotas. If you use aftermarket wipers, the tranny gets a snit on and implodes.

...and may I add, implodes in fine fashion...wowsers!

Without reading 3 pages of replies, I'm guessing U-joints.

Well everyone that guessed brakes was right. It turned out to be the rear driver side and goes back to this summer when the parking brakes locked up in Moab. It bent the bottom of the center ridge on the shoes and caused things to not line up properly. We replaced the shoes and Max will be rolling as soon as he finds a spring kit for it.

Glad to hear you solved this mystery. Most thought it was the front locking and making it squat down.

Glad he got it figured out....I was just going to say not to focus on the front....any forward momentum that is stopped suddenly is going to cause the vehicle to nose dive. If you don't believe me grab the dogs tail next time it runs by!!! :D

    Myself included...

Yep... that certainly was the case.

I was down running with Jasotaco and some others when my parking brake stuck and to get it unstuck I kept rolling forwards and backwards until it popped. I assume this is what bent everything to hell.

I'm still pretty amazed that this locked the whole drum up, but I'm glad it was that simple.

Drove her home and no issues to report.

Sourced new shoes at autozone and a spring kit at Napa.

Thanks again everyone and thanks to all those who offered to help and thanks again Randy and the Mrs.

Happend with my truck 3 times now. Dealership pulled everything apart and found nothing wrong, but recommended me to not use the e-brake ever. For future reference, if it is anything e-brake related you will be able to back up in 4wd and that will free the wheel. Hard on the clutch and a PITA.
