New member: which one, 2006 or 2007?

Hello everybody,

New member here. My little 1992 Toyota with over 200k needs to be replaced, and I'm looking for a Tacoma.

I found a 2006 with about 66k miles, and a 2007 with about 88k. Both are same price and same type, if not identical: 4 cyl 2.7, manual transmission, small cab.

In your experience, which one would be better? Anything to look for? Anything to avoid?

I would go for the 06 with only 66,000 miles.

 

i'd go with the lesser miles

 

i have an 07 and love it...not really any issues other than the blower motor. but lower miles is always good...maybe someone can chime in about the changes they made from 06-07?

 

Some 2005 and early 2006 models had rear end issues.
That being said, I had a 2005 PreRunner and never had any issues.
I had 47,000 miles on it and NEVER had a problem with the engine or transmission.
I will go as far as saying it was most likely a better truck than my 2007 TRD v6.

My current truck (2007 TRD v6) has rattles, a hard shifting transmission, and the A/C blower motor ticks and chirps. The 2005 was was perfect from day one until I sold it.

 

Thanks for the comments. Following some suggestions here, I was leaning toward the lower mileage '06, but it wasn't there (the dealership is a father and son business, and some nephew was using the other truck).

Anyway, the 88k miles '07 looked good, but it had a few flaws. The ones that stick in my mind:

- dome light stayed on on "Door" with doors closed (at first didn't come on at all).

- truck bed (and body underneath) had been drilled a few holes almost 1/2 in on the sides to install a camper cabin I guess. There were also a few smaller holes (about 1/4 in) in the bed floor.

- some of the rails were missing the end caps. There were no adjustable strap rings on the rails (I looked at another model)

- one of the 'side pockets' on the bed liner was missing, the other was loose.

- weather stripping had some holes and tears

- shift stick faux leather hood was loose (had come off from the plastic cup/console--would probably need the whole thing removed and glued)

- tire pressure light stayed on for some reason

- very minor rust spots in some places, including some rust on the big muffler and a tailpipe joint

I'm not expecting a mint truck after 88k, but I was hoping not to have to spend extra to check and replace stuff like some of those items.

Any suggestions?

My 07' has those problems.
The weather stripping on back door is cracked. It's about where the handle is on the back door.
Good news is that the doors are double sealed and that is the inner seal. I haven't had any leaking problems.
I looked and MANY other Tacomas have this, most people don't even know until I show them.

As for the Tire Pressure light, I gave up on it along time ago. I don't even notice it any more.
Again, this is a common complaint on the current Tacomas.


The only rust I have is on the rear 2 dbed bolt and some of the bolt in the bed that are on the side next to the tail gate and above the the storage boxes. They hold the metal part of the bed on.

My 05' had ZERO problems......
The 07' has some problems, but nothing major as of yet.
I say yet, because my blower motor is ticking louder every week now.
My Truck has 37,000 miles on it. I honestly think it should have ZERO problems at this low of mileage.

If you get the VIN's you can also check the service history on MyToyota.com.
It'll at least give you a idea of what was done if it was done at the dealer.

I've noticed the rust on the bolts on the bed liner near the tailgate. There's no noise from the blower fan though.

Go with the 07. I have heard the 06 tacomas had lots of problems...

 

Well, your 06 is a prerunner. I was referring to the 4WD tacomas. lol

 

In spite of its lower miles, the '06 was very dirty, had a steering problem, and a cracked boot on one of the shocks. The '07 seemed so much better, and the dealer was willing to fix the missing items, total price $9800 out the door. But as I had heard a faint grinding sound from the front brake, we decided to go to the shop next door and had it raised and checked. The rotors didn't look good, and I noticed oil on the L rack and pinion boot. They quoted $225 for the brakes, and $600 for the rack and pinion. Dealer offered only to split the cost for brakes, but I thought it would be too much to put into it right after buying.

Shoot, I was so excited about getting the '07, but getting past the magic $10k after cleaning my bank account was a big downer, so I walked away (I'm still thinking about options though).
