09 backup camera with aftermarket HU?

does anyone know if it is possible to use the factory backup cam on the tailgate with an aftermarket HU?
i have the video in the mirror but its pretty much worthless that small and my kenwood 8120 has a rear cam input i would like to take advantage of.

 

I imagine it's possible... it's an NTSC video signal I imagine... should work... me thinks.

 

ok guys io have good news, i called the company that makes the rear view mirrors and asked them for the pinout on the mirror.
if you remove the plastic cover on the mirrir to get access to the wires you will find a 10 pin plug
on the right side of the connector is pin 1 with a red wire, next to the left a white and several pins to the left another red i think its position 6

the first red wire is the + cam signal the white is the - cam signal i saldered a RCA cable onto these wires and plugged that into the rear camera input
the remaining red is the backup wire so i used that.

i now have video on both the mirror and the aftermarket head unit. you can definitly see more detail on a 7" wide screen!

If you cut an rca cable there are two wires....pos negative....solder to those

 

I'm not exactly sure on how this plug works but... you should be able to push out the two red pins. Then solder your wire onto the pin or just below it. Put the pins back into to the molex connector. Then just route it down to your head unit and it should work.

You could also cut some of the wire loom back and then use some 3m scotchlok t-tap an then just take the video off of those.

 

i soldered because i didnt want to use a t tap it would not fit under the plastic cover so i used a stripper to strip the insulation back without cutting the actual wire, soldered to that and taped it up.

you need to cut off the end of an rca cable and use the shield for ground and the center for + same with the backup wire.

 

by the way i noticed when i plugged in the video cable to the HU with the reverse cam on the one in the mirror dims slightly due to signal loss. its not a lot but it could mean things arent as bright as they would be normally, i have not figured a way to turn off the mirror screen without killing the video all together it seems the mirror must be sending a voltage to the cam to turn it on.
so unfortunatly you have to run both or none at all.

 

I have an '09 SR5 with the backup cam in the tailgate handle. No mirror. Is the plug still up in the roof somewhere? How do I access it?

I did this mod this weekend and it works pretty good. The only draw back it the picture on the stereo headunit loses some of the picture quality.

 

yea i was actually thinking of adding a second backup camera so i can can 2 different views. i thought about using the mirror function on the kenwood so i can read license plates behind me

 

Did you try just cutting the video wires that go to the mirror and see if that would work? I know that you had to have the mirror plugged in for it to work which makes me think that the power for the camera was going through the mirror.
