Wow so far about 50% have had to replace at least once, with close to 20% yearly! I wonder if this consistant with other vehicles out there? I think I have only replaced one windshield in my driving career of 33 yrs...

Ive addressed every thread regarding this issue in the past 2 years or so. Some of my background: 3rg generation glazier/glass guy. I currently estimate/PM architectural glass and metal sales for a large union company on the east coast. This year will be my 20th year since being a gopher for pops on the weekends/after school.

#1) Toyota has NOT gone to thinner glass. Safety standards have gotten more stringent not less. The PVB inter-layers have gotten stronger, thinner, and more impact resistant. Some glass guys will tell you the glass is thinner - they are 100% wrong - the plastic inter-layer has gotten thinner. If your glass guy tells you this "urban myth" it's time to get someone who actually knows their shit.

#2) To avoid chips don't tailgate - this is the #1 cause of window chips.

#3) Bug guards deflect the rocks that would of hit your hood into your windshield.

    4) Aerodynamics on newer vehicles are much better then the older vehicles. This is the main reason 2005+ Tacoma's experience so many issues with chips. For a quick example open your window on your truck while doing highway speed - the influx of air is much greater then that of an older vehicle. That extra wind carries debris over your bumper/hood and into your windshield.

I ran one for 2 years and after my windshield looked like it was hit with bird-shot I removed it and have way less impacts the past 1-1/2 years.

How does a repaired windshield chip affect resale? You can see the chip, but it's not supposed to spread (according to Safelite).

Never had a problem on my 06 or my '11. Not even the roll effected the windows. Around here there are a lot of lime rock trucks too. My parents have an 07 Jeep Liberty, within a month is developed 2 chips in the window and a small crack.

Having replaced a windshield this year, let me offer you some sound advice. Do not get after market glass. Make sure your glass shop orders it from Toyota. I had a glass shop put in some cheap glass from China, and the sides were like looking through fun glass at the carnival. Not to mention the fit was not right!!

Points are well taken but I'll pick a couple of nits.

On #1, it seems if the inner layer of the sandwich is thinner the windshield is thinner. No? Most people who say the glass is thinner are referring to the windshield thickness.

On #2, tailgating, this is a tough one. Not that I'm advocating tailgating but if you are RIGHT ON somebodies bumper you probably won't get chips, the geometry doesn't work. And if you are 1000 feet behind them you probably won't get chips either. The chip safe distance is likely dependent on speed but sometimes the driver doesn't have a lot of say in the matter. If you are in a fast moving stream of cars and you try to leave a large distance someone is always cutting into the gap.

It's not like we can put on our gray hair (no offense, I have NO hair) and just drive way the heck slower than everyone else to maintain a gap. We aren't driving old Buicks here, not that there's anything wrong with that! :D

The urban legend people come up with is that the "glass" is thinner and that is not the fact. You can knit pick all you want - I could care less. I'm just putting an urban myth to bed. Fact is the "glass" is the same thickness the windshield is NOT. Glass and PVB interlayers are different so when you say glass you are wrong....it's actually called a lite that consists of different pcs of glass.

I'm not here to argue with asshats, if you wanna tailgate like a jackass have fun. I love brake checking douchecanoes that ride my ass. I slam on the brakes as soon as I see them texting.

My 05 is on the 3rd windshield, factory + 2 replacements. Had a lacrosse ball create a perfect bullseye and then 3 months later a good sized rock broke the new one. Been good for 3 years with the replacement.

Be sure to seal the cowl with silicone when a replacement is installed. If you don't, you'll get water in the vents and it will smell musty.

Rock chip spread out on my windshield last night. I have glass coverage with no deductible with AllState. I had them pursue replacing with an oem replacement but they denied since the aftermarket is $98 and the OEM is $1097. Aftermarket it is!
