Here are some pics of my 2001 Toyota Tacoma retrofitted with TRS Mini D2S's.

    The lighting setup consist of:
    - VAIP Vision aftermarket head lights
    - Retro-Solutions 55W HID Kit (already had on truck or I would have purchased a new kit from TRS)
    - TRS Mini D2S Projectors w/ Gatling Gun Shrouds
    - TRS Morimoto 5Five 5000K bulbs

A big thanks to Andrew from TRS for doing the retrofit!

the front half of both the d2s and the H1 are plastic unless trs has changed them since i had them.

i was told by them last year that they do not handle the extra heat from hotter set-ups well at all.

also 2 professional retrofitters have also told me the same thing they are also not a sealed design they are an open design so all that heat just goes straight out into your housing.

i went through this myself back in october when i was putting together the parts for my latest retrofit. i was down to the H1 mini and the fx-r and bjorn from custom lightz was then the third person that had told me that the minis and 55 watts do not mix well. i ended up with the fx-r because i knew i wanted to run 55 watts this time around.

the entire front half of the mini's are constructed out of plastic and they are open so all of that added heat and there is a good bit more heat from the hotter ballast can have negative effects on things down the road a bit once he gets some hours on them.

i was bringing this to the op's attention so that he didn't end up hurting his housings or his projectors in the future.

edit: sorry lol my first comment sounded a bit tarded but, the info is good :)

    Thanks man!

    Thanks!

I had this same concern when going with this setup. I was told by TRS that the Mini H1's do not handle 50/55W setups because of their size but the Mini D2S projectors are larger and will work just fine. I was actually going to buy a complete TRS HID setup and ditch my current one but Andrew @ TRS reassured me multiple times that this setup would be fine and I have found several posts online where Matt @ TRS has said the same thing. Also, Andrew @ TRS actually did the install on the side for me so I asked that question to him multiple times while I was there.

they are both plastic and neither are a sealed design .

those two things are the reason they both don't handle 55 watts well and with some hours on them the op stands a chance of running into some issues down the road.

it is a possibility that they will last a couple of years but, probably not.

i didn't want to clog up dudes thread or start a debate here. i just wanted to inform the op of the possible risks involved in running the mini's and pushing them with hotter ballast.

i said my piece in order to save the op some troubles down the road if he or anyone else takes the advice fine if not whatever.

50/55w in Mini D2S is fine. No need for alarm.

Pics look great Matt! Glad you like it!

matt and nate both told me different last year when i had called in.
bjorn had also just told me that it wasn't a good idea either. hence why i went with the fx-r instead of the mini H1.

well in that case sorry to you guys at trs and for the wrong info op. i was operating under the assumption that it was possible but, not a good idea.

i'm just curious is the latest generation of mini different from what was available last year when i had spoke with matt and nate? or have you guys discovered it actually is fine to do this over the last year?

in all fairness the last time i had spoke with trs about this it was december 2010 maybe something has changed since then.

The Mini H1 is not 50/55w stable and is known to burn, so going with the FX-R instead is a good choice there. As for the Mini D2's, we've had many customers running those with 50/55w and even offer it on our site in the Mini D2S Stage III kits. If those bowls were burning we would probably be the first to hear back about it.

The bowls are the same I do believe it is just an ongoing realization that the D2S bowls aren't burning with 50/55w setups like the MH1s are.

    :)
