States to begin drug testing for welfare recipients.

Some states are trying to push to have welfare recipients tested for drugs while they are on welfare. Personally I think this should have happened a long time ago and never been appealed by the states that had it enacted. A few links to read up on. Your thoughts?

I don't always , but when I do, I for drug testing stations at the welfare office. Cause I don't like payin for other peoples shit.

This should be mandatory country-wide.

It should be noted that in 1999 Missouri tried something like this but was struck down by the supreme court stating the it was "unconstitutional" yet employers are well within their rights to do so to their employees.

 

In principle I'm behind this 100%, in reality I'm not so sure. I completely agree that anyone on welfare should be clean but how does the drug testing get funded and who enforces the drug testing? People work hard to cheat the system and cheating a basic drug test is relatively easy to do. Forcing people to take better drug tests would mean spending more money. At some point it's no longer financially beneficial to start up a welfare drug testing program unless enough people would get kicked off welfare to fund it (in which case you could probably bet they'll get on some other program anyways...). Again, I'm not opposed to it, I agree with the principle 100%, I can just see this costing more money in the end.

 

I like this idea. I have a lot of family members in the med field and we see "welfare" patients with very expensive habits...

I just feel bad for the kids of the parents who will lose welfare because of their addiction.

 

I can see one possible benefit as sifting the lowest of the low out. If you're not intelligent enough to fool a simple drug test (or just stay clean long enough through the process) then you probably don't deserve much in the way of help.

I don't feel as bad for the kids because growing up in a low-income, drug-addicted household isn't exactly painting a bright future for those kids, anyway. Might be for the best to get them out of there. Or serve to incentivize the parents to stay clean.

That being said, it runs counter-intuitive to my previous statement to Pugga, in that the kids who get removed from their families now will be placed under state care, which will cause costs to rise -- thus negating the benefits of dropping some people from Welfare.

Short summary: people need to be less stupid.

 

Maybe drug testing the parents would give the kids a better shot at growing up with a bright future..

 

Aaaaannnd.....if I had read the VERY FIRST LINK, it makes all the arguments I just made in my last post. Plus some.

The first one (Georgia) goes on to make these very valid points:

1.) Failing of a drug test would only result in the parent losing benefits, not the children. So the parent still has no incentive to get clean because they are still getting the kids' benefits.

2.) The number of drug users receiving benefits is so low comparatively, that it is financially unfeasible to test everyone to weed out the few.

3.) Dropping the kids' benefits would possible incentivize the parents to get clean in order to receive benefits. But in the meantime, you have further pushed the children down the ladder because nobody in the household is getting anything.

I'm not really sure that placing children in state care facilities/foster homes is necessarily an upgrade to the alternative, given the poor levels of education, unstable environments, abuse, etc. Seems like you'd be swapping one bad scenario for another.

you want to fix the problem of welfare ?

Simply make it so that a welfare reciepent has NO VOTING RIGHTS as long as they are taking in welfare. It will never happen of course but it would keep all the welfare addicts from using voting power to keep welfare abuse alive and active.

 

Isn't welfare supposed to help a family out for a short period of time?
It's like politics (in my opinion), not a career.
People who are sitting on welfare for longer than 6 months should be tested regularly and showing real hard proof why they can't get a job to support their families. Too many loopholes in the systems, they need to be overhauled and locked down so that it reads word for word with no possiblity of incorrect interpretation. (like may of the laws in our land)

I think it's a good idea, but won't stop anything unless it's totally random, as stated above most test are pretty simple to beat, especially if you know it's coming, I like the not voting rights on welfare thing, or if in prison. You've forfeited your right to do so. I'm afraid Cali has sailed, it'll never be back.

So, why not the hard working employees that are footing the bills, they're certainly being tested to provide the funds.
