The profits still go back to Asia. Your arguement is invalid. Also, since there are so many foreign investors and owners in most companies, the "Made In The USA" logo is mostly meaningless.
The only thing that I will agree with is that "Made In The USA" keeps jobs here, which is good!

As a Tacoma owner I know you're not anti-Toyota so this is not a shot at you. It is the chance for me to respond to your point, the same point I've heard from people I know that work at one of the "big three".

If one looks at the operating and net profits of these companies it is a positve single digit percentage at best. When I consider the, I'll use 3%, manufactures cost as a point or reason not to purchase a Toyota this number is meaningless to me.... If I look at GM and see that it had a full 10% less US (or is it American) content then Toyota, it moves to overall $$$ spent in the US to a lower $$$. This assumes the cost of production is the same. There are many other factors to consider if one really wants to keep the most $$$ in the US (as I'm sure most of us that live here would like).

For example: The fact that the big three (one of them that's not even completely US owned anyway) purchase much of their own tools and materials from other countries such as the Schuler press made in Germany to help produce exterior body panels for GM "made in America" truck products. If GM wants me to buy American (& really US) products, shouldn't they do the same?

I don't buy any vehicle based upon where it is made or who made it. We buy vehicles we like that fit our life style.

GM aint all bad. Bought a new 2001 Corvette and kept it for 5 years, now own a 2009 that we bought new. Neither car required one trip back to the dealership for anything and I don't baby them if you know what I mean. Bought a 2002 Ford F250 diesel 10 years ago. 92,000 miles later finally had to spend $500 on one repair. 20,000 of these miles were towing boats weighing up to 9,000 pounds.

There is good and bad with any large company. The current Tundra design was slammed for a year for multiple problems and terrible gas mileage as well. Such is life.

The profits going back to Asia is a typical short-sighted argument by a pro-union person. All these companies are listed on the U.S. stock exchanges and profits benefit anyone who owns that stock. We are certainly able to purchase that stock. The purchase of a Toyota creates state and local tax dollars for the community it is built in, income tax from the worker and Federal taxes from the company. Most of these companies also receive parts from U.S. companies, filling our coffers with more tax dollars and workers.

Perhaps you would rather these companies build and export to the U.S. instead of working with American workers? My advice to you is to take a class in economics and read something other than "The Daily Worker". Comments like that show you are only listening to your union rep and not gleaning any information from other sources.

I would be happy to explain how the American car manufacturers have benefitted from Japanese and Korean car manufacturers by observing efficient, quality processes to build a vehicle and not getting bullied by labor unions.

This is the most spot on analysis ever. Profits wind up in the hands - or bank accounts - of shareholders of public companies. Toyota is one of them. Anyone can become a Toyota shareholder, and there are numerous Americans among them. While Toyota's reasons for opening manufacturing plants here might be selfish in nature, what corporation isn't? Bottom line is they employ American workers, utilize American sourced parts, and inject millions of dollars into our local economies. Win.

I drive into Detroit every couple months for a game or something; I've never had had anyone even notice I drive a Tacoma. And I have a big white Sockmonkey "Toyota" sticker across the tailgate. :notsure:

You may be confusing "made in" with "assembled in", parts are sourced from all over the world unlike years ago when a vehicle would be almost completely built at a single location.
