Our rescued bulldog mix, Piggy is having surgery today. She has a Hygroma on her left elbow. It started out as a small, fluid filled lump, about the size of a ping pong ball. Over the past few days, it has grown to baseball size and seems to have gotten infected, her lower leg has also become swollen.

She has not been eating for the last day and unable to keep much down. This morning she would not get out of bed and when we did get her up, was shaky and disoriented.

We took her to see Dr. Pote this morning and he agreed that the Hygroma looked to be infected and the leg was getting septic. Also in his examination, he found some lumps in her mammary glands that he found quite concerning.

She will be having surgery to flush out the Hygroma and take care of the infection. They will also do some blood work to determine if she has any other issues, cancer being a possibility.

I would not normally bother you all with such a thing, but Piggy is a good soul and has had a rough life. She was brought to us 2 years ago by The American Bulldog rescue. They got her from Philadelphia, where she was picked up by Animal Control. She had been used for breeding and obviously abused. Her teeth have been broken off and has scars on her head and nose from beatings.

Our hope for her was that we could provide her with a good, safe home, something that she had not known. Although she has been a challenge at times, she is very much an important part of our family.

If you have a second and the inclination, throw a little prayer out for Piggy. She's a good girl and we would like to keep her around for a bit longer.

    Thank you all.

Dr. Pote called and said that the surgery is over and they inserted some drainage tubes for the hygroma. the challenge will be getting rid of the infection and keeping it from coming back. She is still in life-threatening danger.

They also took some blood samples to test for cancer.

I would imagine tomorrow. Hopefully the drainage will be done before they let her go. I just spent the last hour cleaning blood off of the carpet where she had laid down.

I doubt if there will be rehab, but the chances of infection are pretty good, she may need a skin graft to cover the would. I wonder if they could take some of her belly skin, she could use a little nip/tuck.

Is this just a cover for some "other" surgery?
