Could not live without snow. Just this last weekend I was skiing up to my knees in powder with blue sky above and a few thousand feet of powder below. Heaven:)

I've had ice in my compressor before , but wouldn't have thought about it in the tire .

    Very logical and here's why....

There is a certain amount of water vapor in "air". It varies depending on weather.
When air is compressed, water vapor separates and forms liquid water within the compressor system.
We sometimes place water traps in our nail gun lines to keep water out of our guns. We also try to remember to open the petcocks on our tanks at the end of work to dump water.

So apparently someone aired up your tire with a compressor that either didn't have a water trap or its tank was not regularly drained.

Everything was fine while the water was in its liquid state, flying around in there. Then one night the water froze at the bottom of the tire.
Then this uninvited "wheel weight" threw your tire grossly out of balance at speed.

I'm still amazed that so few shops put nitrogen in tires....prevents a lot of problems like this and pressure fluctuations with temperature. Only place I know of near me that has the equipment is Costco.

It's also likely the tire(s) were left in out in the weather before they were mounted and the guy installing them didn't get it out. Most tire guys I've delt with are doing well to clean the mud from inside the rim before ballancing, it's frustrating.

That is what they think happened. I mentioned everyone's suggestions from the forum to the store owner and how I was going to let everyone know it was ice that caused the problem. He admitted that the guys probably did not drain all the water before putting the tire on. He was actually hoping I was not going to post this info back because he felt like a ass.

I have to say that the vibration was violent. Scary shit.

Caus air is free. They already need it for lifts, air guns and what ever runs on air. The nitro is a tad more expensive to make. Check out the price on this small compressor. http://www.tooltopia.com/rti-technologies-4558002400.aspx?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=RTI4558002400&utm_campaign=googlebase_18u&gclid=CP7_5Jawza0CFaQbQgodsWKfjA

He's only an ass if he doesn't correct the problem at no cost to you, or doesn't take the oportunity to educate his guys on doing their job correctly. Things like this happen, but how it's dealt with after the fact is what makes all the difference. It actually sounds like a decent place to do business if the owner truly did feel like an ass about it happening. Too many wouldn't care.
