Fork Mount for MTB on Toolbox

Ok well this is the write up of any kind so be easy on me haha and i really have no idea how to get the pictures to go upright. ive tried and none of them work so yea you have been warned

ok so i wanted a better way to transport my bike/s. i used to just pile them on top of one another and i never really liked it very much. I also didnt want to spend a shit ton of money on something simple that midget with one leg and one arm could do while asleep.

so i went out and found a couple of cheap locking fork mounts to put some where. after looking around on here everyone always found awesome ways to mount them up to the rail system such as http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/198157-make-your-own-bed-bike-mount.html

but i dont want to remove my toolbox everytime i want to take them somewhere and never really found any thread on mounting them to the actual toolbox. so yea there are probably a few out there that i didnt see (dont really care). this is how i put it together.

so first i started out by seeing how far to one side i could put the bike. then i marked where the holes were on the mount and did a little drilling (my favorite thing haha)


then i proceeded to just mount it up with a couple of screws and rubber grommet-nuts. but make sure you also put some sealant down in there to keep the weather out of the toolbox.

eventually (maybe tomorrow) ill do up the other 2 mounts. so after its all said and done ill be able to transport 3 bikes upright.

Hey have you finished the other two? Did you have to put the rear tires of the bikes on the ends of the toolbox over the wheel wells? Or do they sit flat in the bed?

 

they sit in the bed. i had to go back and put a little backplate under the fork mounts because the aluminum on the toolbox wasnt exactly "strong" but now its solid.

i didnt end up doing the other two. i dont have enough bikes to fit the need so i nixed the idea. but overall im happy with it.

 

Just be mindful of your back glass

 

if your talking about the fork mounts hitting, they happen to just clear the glass by about an inch (mine do at least).

but if your referring to the bike hitting, i havent really had to much of a problem with that.

but yea make sure theres no contact when the box is open or you may just crack or chip it.

good luck man. i think the UWS boxes are a little thisker and stronger than the cheap kobalt ones so you may or may not need a backplate. but let us know if you do or not. im curious.

 

That's steel tho correct? I have the USW lowpro aluminum and it has a top layer and an inside layer.. it buckles with the bikes attatched and bounces all around. Any suggestions to beef it up? I was thinking about cutting the inside layer out and adding a piece of wood to give it some backing.. Thoughts, opinions?

 

Woops sorry didn't read the rest of thread. Can you take a picture of the plate you used?

 

i just added a little piece of steel plate cut to fit the corner it was going in. yea they still sway a tiny bit but not near as much and i feel much better about it.

the wood may help a tad bit. hell do it and post back? then we'll really know what works and doesnt

 

i will eventually its dark out and i have a good bit of work to do in the next week or so but ill try.

but it was just some light 3/16 (i think) plate i do believe. the boss just had some spare pieces laying around and i picked it up. but lowes or home depot would probly have it but i havent checked.
