I cant remove my front sight post pins

I was getting ready to install some troy free float rails and I cant get the tapered pins out of the front sight post...me and two other guys that work in the armory couldnt do it either!

we had all the proper tools. punches, brass hammers, reciever blocks with a vise.
now my upper reciever is in pieces in a box...

I think im going to lowes tonight to get a good blade for my dremmel and cutting off the FSB.
Any thoughts or ideas?

 

Drill the pins??

 

You need a FSB block, commercial or homemade from a block of wood.
Steel hammer, steel punches.

Straight, non-tapered pins can be a beotch.

we had it supported with a block of wood. still would not budge. It was hard to keep the punch on the pin too, it would slide off after every hit, re align and hit again...nothing. It was very frustrating!
I had two guns to work on and now I have one taken apart and havent touched the other one yet

 

Make sure you're trying to punch them out the correct way.

yea, we were going the correct direction.

 

The only other recommendation would be to heat it up if you don;t want to cut it off.

 

I had to heat the ones on my Dad's colt to get them out. Every other rifle I have worked on has been a breeze except the colt.

 

good idea on the heat. I can see little tiny metal shavings from where they drove the pins in. that shit is in there super tight!

thats what I was thinking. I have a new GB to put on. I was just wanting to do it this morning at work. Now I have to cut it off tonight and re assemble everything tomorrow (hopefully).

I took my time, braced my barrel down, and everything came out great so far. I will finish on thursday and I'll put up the finished pics then

the 16" upper was way easier. the pins just taped out nice and easy

the carbine is in pieces in my safe I have a barrel nut wrench/armorers tool on order and then I will finish that.

Kinda late but why did you cut off your front sight instead of just cutting it down. You can trim enough off for the ff handguard to fit over easily. Plus its still factory fit.
You can see how skinny the Spikes SAR rail is and I have no clearence issues ay all. Like I said It's a little late but just a reference for ur next build.

I got my Nikon scope mount in yesterday and mounted my scope. I need to have it bore sighted and then get to the range!
