Shifting your Automatic Tranny? 2nd Gen.

OK, so a few of us were discussing the "Shifting" of an automatic, 2nd Gen, Taco. Good? Bad? Indifferent? Any input or logic on this one? It later evolved into having the truck in 4H & in 4L... BTW: Most of the wives/GF's hate when we shift our Automatics! LMAO

I personally never do it but see nothing wrong with it. Winding RPMs?

 

I shift down for engine braking or to limit gears when I want .

WILL NOT HURT THE TRANNY

 

I do it when I'm towing if I want to hold it in a certain gear while I'm going up or down a hill. Sometimes when I'm bored I might mess with the shifter but other then towing I have no delusions that it offers any performace gains.

I suppose towing up a steep hill and wanting to keep the tranny from going into fifth, putting it in 4th would prevent it from bogging down.

 

I do it just for fun RARELY! Engine braking is fun, especially when you're coming up to a light doing 50, then you're at 10 and didn't hit the brakes once! Person in back of you is like

 

For most driving just keep in D. No need to do anything else.

If you're driving on steep inclines, declines, or towing/have heavy cargo in the bed then you might find it beneficial to use one of the lower gears.

but why did you buy an auto if you want to shift?

 

Limiting gears in 4wd for snow etc is one reason to shift an auto

 

Ah okay, so basically just telling it not to upshift when you don't want it to. I've never driven an auto in the snow so I've never dealt with this stuff.

 

If you by used then you have to take what they have or wait around for ever. I really wanted 4 wheel drive but it got to the point where I needed a new vehical sooner than later. and the deel that I got was to hard to pass up.

 

Yeah I waited a good 9 months for my truck. And I was looking for a ford ranger that entire time . Talk about luck.

but yeah 5 spd and 4x4 were my priorities.

 

Yes , or a decending steep incline in snow under power in 4LO , you don't want it to upshift

 

I only shift when I'm towing. I will lock it into 4th so it doesn't hunt for gears. Otherwise it's 'D' or 'R'.

 

I ended our discussion on this with "Add a Supercharger"!!! No shifting needed! LMAO
