But, your bike didn't need a rebuild afterwards, and no worries if you were gonna get home.

OP, I am out shopping myself. I an 6'2 and 250. I have been sitting on and playing with every bike the shops will let me. As others have said, FZ1 or FZ8! Same frame and motor, just different CCs (few cosmetic differences too). The FZ8 is about $2k less than the FZ1 and has plenty of power, unless you are looking for a top end track bike. The ride is not as aggressive either.

Do to every shop you can and sit on the bikes, find whats fits and feels good.

basically. 75 mph the entire way + no windshield and a 2x4 for a seat are no good lol.

true that. That thing will go anywhere, it won't get there fast but it'll get there

    No.. I 1000 is a HORRIBLE suggestion.

Harley isn't as horrible but not that great suggestion...

Cruisers I have to say I like the Victories. Cheaper than Harleys.. don't vibrate as badly.. and they look pretty damn good!! Hold up well too.

SV - one of the best naked/half naked bikes out there. MANY MANY happy customers for this bike! And i'm a Honda girl saying this.

But again... 1000cc is a HORRIBLE suggestion! I don't care how big you are... HORRIBLE!

For a first time street rider (street and dirt are two different worlds) it's very dangerous. Throttle response is so much more on a 1000cc than anything lower. As a first time street rider you WILL make mistakes. You probably will get wrist fatigue.. you will get target fixation.. 1000cc is SO much less forgiving!! My 1000s always came up off the ground if I did too much throttle too fast. I had wrist fatigue on my first bike and it just jerked forward (still could have sucked) a 1000 would have be MUCH worse.
There is just too much power there to properly learn.

I "learned" on a 500cc but went on the street for the first time on a cbr600rr. I'm still a timid rider. I bet money that if I stayed on that 500cc until I wore it the hell out I would be 100% better than I am now at riding!
    I do regret it.

Wide Glide...Gobs of power and plenty of room as is or you can buy all kinds of aftermarket seats, bars, and forward control extensions to stretch out more.

I'm 6'2'' and 240 lbs. I couldn't decide if i should buy a sportbike or a cruiser...so i took my 10,000 that i was gona spend on a new bike and bought two used ones. The best part is that i only spend 6,900 total on both of them. Thanks craigslist!

While normally I'd agree with you if we were discussing supersports... but the Ninja 1000 has a much more timid power curve than say a ZX10R or CBR1000... The Ninja has a flatter more low range torque... the throttle response is smooth and not nearly as much as a "beast" as the supersports with the same displacement.

    I would normally suggest a SV650 or a Ninja 650

comfy, sporty but not a sport bike, good for a first time rider:
    Yamaha FZ6
    Suzuki SV650
    Suzuki Gladius
    Suzuki GSX650f
    Kawasaki Ninja 650
    Kawasaki ER-6n
    Honda 599

I suggest you sit on all of them and see what feels best to you and what has the looks you like

I agree about staying away from 1000 + cc 4's for a first bike

I personally have a Honda 919 for street riding and enjoy it

I agree with Solus with the Kaw 1000 being more timid than a full fledged repli-racer hence why it would be a decent choice. But looking back at the OP's age and the fact that he is looking for used, Nikki is probably right (no offense on the age thing OP). And 180 pounds is not THAT big IMO.
An SV would be an excellent choice or any of the bikes that Omar recommended. And like others have said, go sit on all of them that you can and do your research on them before you make your choice. You might find this forum helpful. http://www.beginnerbikers.org/forum.php

Also, take the riders safety course. I know you have experiance with dirt bikes but trust me when I say, it will make you a better rider no matter what your experiance level. And it's fun.

Let us know what you find.

Thank you for all the imput. Sounds like I need to get to a dealership and sit on some bikes. The kind of riding I think Ill be doing the most of is commuting, rides on the weekend, and just whatever in between. I dont think I'll be doing a whole lot of speed/track stuff. I'd rather just ride and look good doing it. And I'm signed up to take the rider safety course in Oregon when I get down there next month. I'll let yall know what I end up getting
