how to install a 4 pin wiring harness into my SR5

hey tacoma world, i have an SR5 without tow package and i wanted to install a 4 pin wiring harness to tow my 16 foot aluminum boat. how hard is this to do does anyone have a brief description?

 

I'd buy a kit that just plugs into the tail light harness and then it's just a couple clips and zip ties. Mount the hitch first so you know where you can secure the harness.

 

Make sure it has a converter for the turn signals.

 

x2, I have one of those kits for a 4 pin connector. Very simple install, no wire splicing necessary. You can install one yourself in about 15 - 20 minutes with a wrench (to remove the tail lights) and some zip ties.

 

I have a 2010 SR5, and added a receiver hitch and a 4 - pin trailer wiring harness. It cost about $20, but included everything (even the zip ties). Just pull the tail light lense, unplug the bulbs, plug the wiring harness in between, then replug the tail light. find a handy place to secure the small converter, which came with an adhesive on the back. I found it easier to run the wiring from the bottom up into the tail light housing. I always take longer than necessary to triple check things, but the whole thing took about half an hour. Google will help you find the right kit, many online companies sell these.

If you can afford it, the Toyota module for your truck is the best way to get trailer lights. It is pricey. I put in one of the aftermarket modules that T connect to the tail lights. It worked for about a year, but emergency flashers were non-operative. Eventually I had trouble with other things connected to lighting circuits such as ABS brake warning lights and traction component.

Switched to the Toyota system - which includes wiring, fuses, relay, etc. and no further problems.

 

Can you post the part # and price for this module? How difficult was it to install, or did you have the dealer install it? Thanks!

 

I got mine from Amazon for $47 and installed it in 10 minutes. 8 of those minutes was getting the ground wire installed. Easy job.

 

Was that for the Toyota kit? If so do you have a part #? I believe the Toyota kit runs an entirely new circuit from the fuse box under the hood instead of tapping into the tail lights.

I can't tell you how many of the el cheepo i take out on a weekly basis.

Splicing and tapping is a great way to get corrosion started in the harnesses. The boxes go out or short.

I know everyone wants to save a buck but Toyota's system is designed for the truck.
Yes some will say I have never had a problem with the one i got. Good for you. But, like i said, I change a lot over to factory.

Thats what i installed and it worked on a 3.5k mile cross country trip across difficult weather. Still works and I'm happy with it.

08921-04960. It includes the fuse, relay, converter assembly, wire harness, sub-harness (with the 4 pin plug), zip ties and instructions. It list for $95 but my local dealer matches internet prices so I got it for $80.75. They even had it in stock. I feel a LOT better with whatever I tow on a completely separate circuit than the rest of my lights. Oh, and it was very easy to install.
