ABS System working.

So after reading the ABS is Dangerous thread.

I actually went out and tried to make my ABS kick in.
I did get it to kick in on a gravel road. But I didn't get any warning lights or a buzzer. No ABS light, Bleeps or blinks. NOTHING.
I got a slight humming sound and a bouncing brake pedal.
It felt like someone was tapping on the bottom of my foot. ( That is the ABS working)

First I tried to get it to kick in from a roll with just the truck idle speed.
I could NOT get it to kick in. It just locked the wheels up and slid for a half second and stopped.

Then I got it to about 5 mph and got the ABS to kick in.
I heard a humming noise and the brake pedal started bouncing and clicking.
That is Normal for ABS. I did NOT feel it loose a lot of brake pressure like some have experienced.

I also tried this at about 10 mph. Same thing happens as it does at 5mph.

I did find that it took a good slam on the brakes to make it come on.
I could tell that the truck was about to skid right about the time the ABS came on.

I guess at least I know the ABS is working in my truck.
Feels about like all the other ABS systems I tried.

P.S. I have a 2007 Tacoma, V6, Auto, TRD Off-Road

 

I agree with you people just need some thing to complain about if it's not the ABS it's the 6 speed or this or it's that it's a damn nice truck and the ABS acts just as it does on any thing else out there it's no different then my Jetta.

My guess is you don't use your truck like the people who have issues with it do (like me). The mere fact you had to try to replicate the issue so you can pick it apart is funny to me. If you were driving it in the conditions we were you would know without "testing" what the issue is.

Start playing like we do and then you can comment about how much we complain

I know what you mean- I was driving on a snowy road the other day and slid right through an intersection. It was late at night, so no traffic, but I was alarmed at how long it took to stop! The anti-lock just kept on humming and I tried to lift my foot enough to get it to shut off with no success. You just have to be aware that you cannot lock up the wheels even if you want to.

 

Read my post on ABS and it kicking in on ice going downhill toward an intersection. Pull the #42 - 50 amp ABS fuse and save your life and possibly someone else's.

 

Learn how to drive on ice and snow.

 

come out with us (offroad) and let's hear you say that while your pooping your pants praying to god a loose rock under one tire doesn't send you off a cliff cause ABS engages

not

ABS on these trucks is over active on snow

 

I don't understand why Toyota wouldn't include an "off-road" button that would turn off the Side air bags, ABS, Traction buzzers .. etc.

Seems easy enough and lots of vehicles are coming with different driving modes nowadays.

Soooooo, pulling that fuse will kill ABS until you put it back in? No issues afterwards?

 

The abs light doesn't come on when its activated, or atleast mine didn't.

 

The only time, I believe, it is supposed to come on, is if there is an issue with it. Say, that a fuse is blown or it can't work. I think it is more like a check engine light, for the ABS system.

Mine only ever came on when the sensor was destroyed because my wheel bearing blew out. My friends only comes on when he disables his. So it seems to fit the bill.

 

When your ABS light is on the system has an issue and is shut down (no ABS).

I have passed state inspection with sed ABS light on as it is NOT required by law.

 

I'm not saying it didn't happen to you. And I didn't try to replicate the problem just to "Pick apart" YOUR story.

I did it to see what people were talking about since I have NEVER had the ABS System kick in. I wanted to know what to expect if it did kick in.
No, I haven't tried it in snow or ice, so I can't say if it is over reactive or not
in that respect.

I did have my truck slide once while turning on to a snow covered road that was packed to ice. I don't recall the ABS kicking in. But then again when you are going off the road sliding, everything happens FAST.

Again, I don't doubt ANYONE'S story. I just haven't had the "pleasure" of meeting this gremlin that lives in the Gen 2 Tacomas.

So far I met the Mud Flap Gremlin, the Car Wash Gremlin, and the Blower Motor Gremlin. Tick, Tick, Tick...

Car Wash Gremlin stole my plastic caps on the rear bumper.
Toyota tried to rob me at $26 for ONE cap. No thanks......

Toyota needs to go back to to the Mid 1990's drawing board and trash the 2005+ board.
I don't think they are NEAR as good as the early Tacomas....I've owned 4 of those.

 

Mostly I just try and stay out of ABS, which you can do when driving on public roads for the most part if you're driving for the conditions. Some of the hilly areas with black ice I just stay out of.

These trucks also have pretty good engine braking, even with the automatic transmission. It will maintain speeds down hills and stuff well.

I haven't been off road much, certainly not near a cliff side. I'd think about any vehicle with ABS could be a detriment to you there. Wheels slide, it's going to go into ABS mode.

These trucks have been made for 7 years now with no apparent changes to the ABS system. If they were unsafe, there would be recalls and all kinds of stuff.

For those with the major off road problems, have you compared it to other modern vehicles? I mean, an actual real comparison?
