Didn't know what a winch was until I joined this site 3 months ago. Didn't know what a come along was until I clicked on this thread. I've only seen a lifted Tacoma once and that was last week. I don't think there are too many people around here that goes wheeling that's why I didn't know any of this these things. There are no legal trails for SUVs & Trucks up here in MA.

Soo I thought a come a long was a 'tie down strap' we use for securing crap on trailers and stuff (Strap with a manual winch)

    So I guess I didn't know also.

In my experience, most simply use the words "winch" or "hand winch" to describe the come-along. Indeed, I did for many years and still do occasionally. After all, the come-along is a form of winch or hoist, serving the same general purpose.

By the way, the spelling of come-along varies greatly as well - come-along, come-a-long, etc. I believe "come-along" is (based on the word "along") the correct spelling, but who knows.

    Zombie thread? lol.

I always keep a come along in my truck, it's come in handy a few times! except once I tried to use it to pull my brother's STI onto a trailer after he destroyed his clutch to the point of non-engagement.... and busted his axle at the cv joint lol, damn AWD cars. Just goes to show the strength of these "hand winches"!! and when I bought a replacment axle for my bro's car I got him a tow hook as well for next time haha.

back on topic.. No disrespect but I figured everyone at least knew what a winch was! and kudos to chicks who know their way around tools!!!

LOL. And everyone knows how hard it is to kill these darn zombies. Actually, if the question or comment is related, it's probably better to revive an older thread occasionally, if for no reason other that to avoid repeating the same things already discussed or to add new information not available at that time.

Anyway. do you watch many YouTube videos? There are a great many winching or towing mishaps shown there, with all kinds of damage to vehicles. Most are quite fun to rather sadistically laugh at, but I've learned a few things to avoid as well - one being the scenario you describe (hooking to an axel). Without that, I very likely would have done the same at some point, with similar results.
