Shot in my first carbine match!

Shot in my first carbine match this weekend and it was a blast! (see what I did there?) It was in the high 20's low 30's but no wind. I'm pretty happy with my results. I took 9th out of 16, second in iron sights. I got 3rd in the close quarters stage and I'm really happy about that. The long distance stage really hurt my over all time but I did better than I thought I would considering I've only shot at or over 100 yards a couple times.
The match was 3 stages, 150-200 yards, 25-100 and close quarters. The 150-200 stage had 5 shooting positions shooting at 5 12" steel targets, 1 @ 200, 2 @ 175 and 2 @ 150. That was a bitch with iron sights! I had skipped 5 targets after engaging them a few times and missing for a 10 second penalty each time.

The 25-100 had 3 positions shooting at 7 targets. 4 ipsc targets, 2 at 25 and 2 at 40, and 3 steel targets 1 6" and 2 12" all at 100. The ipsc targets required double taps and steel single hits. The 6" really gave me fits!

The CQ stage was the funnest by far! 16 ipsc targets with a hallway and a bunch of no shoots. Around the last wall was a "hostage situation" had a no shoot covering all but half of a head shot for a sight over bore hit. Still pretty pumped with my time and only 5 seconds in penalties.

i notice a lot of guys in this sport have full-length rail/handguard on their rifles... is that just so you can extend your weak hand out farther for more stability?..

 

And better control of recoil for backup shots. But i ain't no expert, this is the way I was taught. I've only been shooting for 8 months and rifle for 5. I'm still leaning tons every trip to the range.

...he's quick! notice he's manipulating the safety selector switch in between strings of fire... i see this shooting form quite a bit now in training and especially 3-gun/sports vids, ...but is this being adopted by LEO and/or .mil?

Yes sir I have. Plan on taking a pistol class too. The owner of the range I go to is my brother-in-laws dad and he's an instructor. Between the two of them they've taught me a lot. But I'd still like to take a 2 or 3 day class. They are working on getting magpul out therr again looks like maybe late this year.
