Found a squirrel sized rat taking a long nap on top of my air filter this morning.

For awhile I was wondering if the problem could be fixed with a can of gas, and some matches.

The color is a months supply of poison/bait it was eating from my wife's van, and my truck. That caught my eye pretty quick after my immediate urge to puke passed. Opening the plastic cover around the wipers is definitely the cleanest way to get those thing out of there. That intake hole is big enough for a Shetland pony to crawl into. That screen aught to slow them down. We've pulled all the bait out of the vehicles, and sprayed out the engine compartments. We also sprayed a bunch of ammonia, and windex in the compartments. The rats haven't been wandering in the engine area, but now their branching out. I gotta wait till wednesday to pick up a new filter. The rat didn't get much accomplished in the intake, it pissed crapped a little then died.

I could have sworn I saw somebody install a hepa filter unit on the mouth of the intake in here, but can't find anything in the threads here.

I just used a piece of furnace filter on top of the screen (see post #9.) The piece I ended up useing was 1/2 as thick as the one pictured...

Don't put bait/poison in or around your vehicle. It will actually attract them to it.

rat/mouse poison is usually Warfarin, some people may recognize that name, aka Coumadin, its a pill that "thins" the blood of whoever takes it. many humans take it to prevent blood clots, that mouses belly is full of blood and rotting away

I totally set him free right after I took that picture he opened his majestic wings , and flew off over the horizon.

That guy didn't have much life in him, there were only six turds, and a small amount some kinda of really f'd up rat pee in the intake, and no scratching, or nibbling. I'd bet he smelt pretty dead even when he was on the move, so I'd say if he was in there sunday I would have smelt him pretty easy.
