Here is my Remy 700 VSF in 308. (Varmint, Stainless, Fluted bull barrel)
This honey is sighted in with 150 gr Ballistic Silvertip Ammo which is very spendy so she is for hunting rather than paper punching.

Another one to consider which has not been mentioned is the M1A by Springfield. I use mine for both target and hunting. This is the National Match Stainless Walnut version which I hot roddded a bit. From a bench I've enjoyed 3" groups at 600 yards with her shooting 168 grain Match Ammo:[IMG]

I had a rem 700 CDL .308 HB, beautiful rifle, shot very straight and loved the heavy barrel, made sighting in my scope easy. more often than not, i'd be throwin lead in the same hole multiple times @ 150yds easy. i'd go remington.

OK, seriously, how many of you even have shot out to 1K yards?

Or even get the chance to shoot out past 500 yards on a range you have access too?

I get excited if I can find a range past 400 yards. Even on the farm in MO I can't make 500 yards. About 450 yards.

Here in TX a common public range is 100 yards, or 200 yards if your lucky.

This guy being new is going to want a caliber he can afford to shoot often, and be able to shoot often in regards to recoil.

Also the honest point made to him that 1000 yards is seldom going to happen, in Ohio.

That said, a AR-15 platform in 556 (223) is an excellent shooting choice, though limited in hunting options, and not a 1K caliber.

A Rem 700 in 308 is an excellent all round caliber, but for the money I agree, out of the box Savage makes the most accurate platform for the buck spent.

As to ammo price, next to 556/223 the 308 would be the most affordable shooting round, in FMJ.

Glad to hear we have a new shooter in the ranks, but to stick with it, you have to enjoy it, physically and financially.

I agree with wormfood. There seems to be this notion that people "need" to reach 1k yards. Somewhere along the line they forget that they dont have that sort of range nearby.

Luckily for me i have vast expanses of desert and the UTTR to shoot in. Others, its not so lucky.

Also, as a general rule, target builds =/= hunting rifles. There's a stark difference between the two.

Which do you plan on doing more with? target, or hunting?

If you're limited to 200yds for most ranges, i highly suggest 22lr. I've been doing rimfire tac matches alot with my target 77/22 built.

Rimfire shooting to <250yds is a workout, and its a very good skill builder, with little investment

I regularly shoot out beyond 1000 yards, and in Post #6, the OP stated hewould like to try to reach out there. So I have been giving advice on that, since that is something I know. In all honestly, if you go for 1000 yard shotwith a rifle under a grand, it would be more luck than precision, I was tryingto relay what it takes, and it takes a lot.

As far as the AR platform, he also stated that he may want to hunt withit...that right there will eliminate the 223 unless he is just planning onvarmint.

If it were me, Id pick up a 270, 7mm or 308. all can be used for hunting, and only vary on recoil and cost of ammo.

For a new shooter, I still say a 10/22 until you learn to the fundamentals.I still fall back on my 10/22 many times to tune my basics.

Exactly, listen to this guy.....benchrest/precision rifles are worlds apart from hunting rifles, you need to figure out which way you want to go to start with (I say start with because eventually you will buy more guns and go in all directions..haha).

To give you an idea, the glass alone on my long range precision is about $2500, and I want to get better glass..haha its not cheap to try to get out far.

I suggest maybe a 700 CDL 270 for hunting and a 10/22 for target (also to learn the fundamentals)

Everyone is suggesting I get a 700 CDL instead of the 700 SPS

Cdl is geared for hunting. Sps is a heavy barrel making it hard to lug around if you hike and hunt.

I hunt with my SPS and love it actually. I love the shorter barrel and its not that much heavier when compared to rifles with 24-26" barrels. Mine has a bunch of work done to it as well.

And my new toy I just put the first 20 rounds through yesterday. I plan on building this up as a Marine DMR.

Thanks guys for all the help. I got my new gun. I ended up with a rock river at 15 .223 5.56. I will get a .308 Remington in the future but for now I went this route for the cheaper ammo and it's damn fun to shoot.

Our local range goes out to 1200 yards and we get shooters from all over Florida to use it. We had an 880 yard match two Saturdays ago that had wind blowing 20-30 mph. The winner hit 8 out of 15. My #1 son took eighth with 3 hits out of 15 using his custom built 6mm benchrest rifle. It's a lot harder than it looks.
