Help me decide what to get my wife for an early anniversary present. It is about a $150 price difference between the two. Both cameras have the Digic 4 processor. Does that mean they will have about the same performance?

She likes the performance (mostly speed, but also picture quality) of digital SLRs, but she hates the size of them. I'm thinking the G10 will be a good middle ground upgrade for her. She would also enjoy having the wide angle lens of both of these cameras.

Either one will be a good upgrade. We have the SD550.

I don't have any experience with the G10 but based off what I've read, I'd say that would be the better choice. Also, get a high speed memory card.

I love the PowerShot line of cameras; they have been very good to me.

Great, now you've got me looking at G10's competitors. The panasonic dmc-lx3 has the ability to do HD video.

    please do...

I think that I'm going to end up going to cheap route and spring for the SD880IS. It helped that the panasonic could not be found in stock for less than $100 over MSRP.

She really likes the compact size, and I won't be worried about breaking the camera as much by going for this one.

If she is only looking for the speed of taking pictures and not necessarily the options of the SLR, the SD880 is enough. It has a decent optical zoom, more than enough megapixels, and is small and compact. The Image Stabilization technology will help the clarity of pictures, especially at night. There are also some options if needed - obviously not as many as the G10 but you'll get good pictures with the 880.

There's also the option to record video on it (not HD) but from my experience with my SD550, the clarity was good enough to view on a monitor.

Like I mentioned before, make sure you get a high speed memory card because that will be one of the limiting factors of taking pictures quickly.

Go to dpreview.com, they are an unbiased photography review site. My pick would be the SD880IS, it's smaller size makes it easier to carry in a purse. Use the money saved to buy an extra battery and a case for it, buy a Canon case like the PCS-55, a better choice IMO. Also pick up a SanDisc Ultra 2 or Ultra 3 memory card, do not skimp on off brands of cards. Buy at least a 2 gb card, not sure if their is one larger in SD. These are the best I have ever used at a consumer level. I have run these through the washing machine and not damaged them, I don't recomend trying this.
I would also price these at bhphotovideo.com, I have had very good luck with these guys.

I just recently got the SD880IS for my wife. Women usually like a small high performance camera that they can stick in their purse, that's what she wanted and that's what she got. We've got a canon DSLR too, but it's too big. I would think that if the SLR is too big then get her the SD880IS, she'll really like it. The 880 is a very nice camera.

Yes, it was released on Amazon on Feb 17, 2009. :p There haven't been any reviews on it yet, but I would imagine it is the about the same thing as the 880.

Yo! I just got a return authorization from Amazon, I'm gonna return this POS 880IS and go with the better 960. Thanks for letting me know about the new camera. BTW, be glad you didn't get the 880, it's a POS. :D

It's gonna be a while before I get it. I gotta return the shit first, then Amazon has to issue a credit, then I have to buy the 960, then I have to receive the 960, then I have to open the box that the 960 came in, then I have to charge the battery, then I have to place the battery in the camera, then I have to take some pics, then I have to transfer pics to a PC and evaluate the performance. It could take 6 months by the time I'm done.

I have the G10. On the photo forums it's considered a good, photographers walking around camera when you don't want to or can't carry your big pro DSLR set=up.

Manual over-ride, macro features, ruggedly built. Only complaint is that it's a little heavy, but that comes with the territory when you get a point and shoot with so many features.

I went ahead and ordered the SD960. I figured that I should probably stick with a similar camera to the one she likes.
