AR-15 platform?

So I made another thread about getting the remington 700sps. Well, I did a little more research and found that I should get an AR instead of the sniper rifle. Any suggestions?


I was thinking about sig sauer, colt, bushnell, or bushmaster?

What do you own and can you share me a few details about your AR-15?

 

Colt or BCM. If you go BCM, go with a 16 inch barrel, mid-length gas system. The options for the AR are endless. For a nice carbine I'd go Colt or BCM. There are other good options too, such as Noveske, LMT and Daniel Defense and LWRC or HK if you're looking at gas-piston. As a Californian, where many refuse to sell Colt (until recently), BCM was the best choice.

In the end though, it depends on what you want the rifle for. I guess that's the first question you should answer. Home defense, carbine courses, semi-auto sniper rifle, varmint hunter, 3 gun? All of these will be completely different builds. The great thing with the AR is once you get a good lower, you can switch out different uppers.

Another vote for RRA. Flawless through a few thousand rounds.

Also, get the 22lr conversion kit for cheap plinking.

 

Most Colt models are banned by name.
Colt has some models that are legal, but a lot of vendors are unwilling to ship them... and personally, I'm not comfortable being in possession of the older legal models because they are 100% physically identical to the banned models.
Banned models are a felony to even possess.
Even visitors cannot be in possession of them.

I would say do the research and build your own, or find someone who knows what they're doing and tell them generally what you want, your budget, and let them go to town!

You should be able to get the basic rifle for a decent price, optic will bump that up, but you get what you pay for.

 

Check out CMMG, Spikes Tactical, or BCM as stated above. I have a RR right now, but my next build is going to be one of those for sure.

Magazine capacity is an entirely separate issue.
My wife has high-caps for her 92FS. They are legal since she's owned them since before the ban.
I have some for my XD and AR. They have to remain disassembled until I leave California, and I have to break them back down before bringing them home.

No, the ban was simply because the morons in Sacramento decided that some guns (see the appendix on my link above) were scary evil and would kill kittens and bunnies, so they banned them.
The list was originally written in 1989. A new lawsuit resulted in the list being modified in 1999, and the list remained open for new additions after that. In 2006, the list was locked and no NEW receivers can be added without specific legislative action... Sacramento does not want to do that because it would require a new window for registration of AWs and they don't want more registered AWs in California.

So Colt can take the LE6920 (banned) and change the rollmark to CA6920 and it is 100% legal to sell and possess within California...

...as long as it does not violate SB23.
We can not have a semiautomatic, centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine that has:
Pistol grip
Vertical forward grip
Folding or Telescoping buttstock
Flash hider
Grenade Launcher

So we use the "bullet button", which creates a fixed magazine. We need a "tool" to remove the magazine. Really doesn't take much longer than a conventional mag release.

But that creates a problem.
A fixed magazine rifle with a capacity over 10 is also an assault weapon.

So even if we have legal magazines, we can't use them in an AR that has a bullet button.

So some of us go featureless.....

I can legally use a 100rd Beta in it (if I owned a 100rd Beta):




This one has a bullet button, pistol grip, and flash hider.
The magazine is blocked to accept only 10 rounds using rivets.




I also have an AR22.
Rimfire rifles are exempt, so only the magazine import/manufacture restrictions apply, no bullet button is needed.

I run an LMT 10.5" and it runs like a scalded dog. I have had her at 2 different carbine operators courses and put about 5k rounds through her each class without a hiccup. Just pull the BCG out and wipe it down with an oily rag (Slip 2000 for my money but YMMV) re-insert and get on with it.

I have also had great experiences with Stag arms and Bravo Company. I would look seriously at BCMs EAG carbine. THAT is the best deal out there right now. Same price as any other quality weapon but with a TON more stuff.

I would steer WELL clear of Bushmaster (1: It is a commercial grade gun, not a mil spec gun; 2: SERIOUS QA/QC issues) and DPMS (same thing). Colt is WAY over priced and why support a company that doesn't give a shit about gun owners?

Do the research and build yourself one. The options are nearly endless and it is a fun little project you can do with some pretty basic tools. I built mine with a Spikes lower and Spikes 16" upper with mid-length gas system. Not a single issue and smooth as hell. Saved myself some money by doing the assembly myself from the exact parts I wanted.

Build it yourself! You'll have a 100% understanding of the rifle and it's operation. It is very easy to do with basic tools (as stated above).
