Hey guys.. just installed my new kenwood ddx319 into my 05 tacoma double cab non-JBL system.

I have searched this topic and haven't found a thing yet.. so my question is:

How can I bypass the parking brake to be able to watch videos from my iPod and DVDs while the parking brake is not on? I went ahead and put the unit in, and I know I will have to take it back out to run this parking brake wire. I had no idea what to do with this wire, so I left it out completely since I don't really have anything to watch right now anyways, and I already knew I wanted to bypass it.

Everything else with this unit is working flawlessly. The instructions from crutch field were, for the most part, easily understandable.

The install was fairly clean, besides that annoying clock/hazard piece. Here are some pics of the new unit and the wire that isn't currently hooked up (E-Brake wire)

Buy a switch for like 2 bucks, cut the parking break. Hook up positive from the parking break to positive on the switch and same with negative. Stick the switch somewhere and your done. Did it in a couple minutes

Hit up youtube or try google. MFG's change how they do it on occasion, but in general, the relay will work for most units, as it is a delayed ground connection, simulating starting the vehicle and putting the parking break on (what is required by most).

Pioneer is usually quite simple, in many units its just moving a wire in the harness.
If not this, then the relay.

Alpine units are generally done with a PAC adapter, the TR7 IIRC.

I went ahead and bought a switch to use so that I could cut the movie off fast in the event that a cop were to pull me without warning.

Here is the switch and the directions for it.. I haven't had a chance to install the wire yet but my best guess is to cut the parking brake wire in two, put one of the new wires from the top prong on the switch to the ground, and put the other new wire from the back of the head unit to the bottom prong on the switch. Is this the right idea?

Just want to make sure before I pull it all back out because I have never used a switch before in my wiring experience.

The switch is now your "parking brake". When the switch is closed, or on, your head unit is grounded and thinks the parking brake is on and lets you play a movie. You won't need to touch the actual parking brake wire.
Ground to switch, switch to head unit.

I got the same head unit in my truck and love it. Did you have the steering wheel control adapter put in too? The only problem ive found with that is the stereo will randomly switch songs or modes. Im pretty sure its not the head unit and is just a poorly programmed adapter.

Dumb question, but can't you just click the parking brake one click? Thats how my old car turned off the drtl's, so shouldn't it be th same for those radios?

I put a DDX419 with the Axxess steering wheel adapter in my Taco and it's doing the exact same thing. This must be a known problem so maybe I'll call Crutchfield.

Just hook up that reverse wire to ground on the Kenwood radios. I soldered it into same ground for the head unit and steering wheel adapter. Works perfect.

Does anything need to go on the middle prong of the switch though?

Took a look at your instruction picture. Is this a lighted switch? From your intructions, I would say you want to go bottom pin (they say 12v+) to the ground, and middle pin to the parking brake lead of your stereo. This switch is interrupting the middle and bottom pin. The top pin that they want you to ground I assume is due to a lighted switch.

This is a lighted switch, but I couldn't care less if it lights up or not. I just want it to serve the purpose of allowing me to view video media when flipped on, and preventing me from viewing video media when flipped off.
