I am a former LEO, so listen carefully. Polygraphs are notoriously unreliable. So, stay as calm as possible. They measure your breathing, pulse, and sweat. When people lie, one or more of those triggers usually goes off. So answer truthfully and without hesitation, all questions will be yes or no. Good luck and GOD speed.

Here's my story from the poly...

My first one, i was in all strapped up and they started asking the control questions...Is your name __? Are you awake? Do you live at __? Then he said, this next question is very important...It will tell us how observant you are? What color is my shirt?

I was like...Oh shit...I only saw the guy once...And this was one of the important questions...I was like....Blue??? He said...Just joking...relax...why are you so nervous???

I was thinking shit...I just screwed up...But he did that to get a jump of the needle on the paper...So when ever i got nervous he could compare that to the control...

Ive had 5 in the past 5 yrs...If you just stay calm they cant really tell anything...If its for a gov job, and they ask you about drugs, tell the truth, if the really want to hire you they will get you counseling for it and hire you anyway...But if you lie your done...At least thats the way it was here...

What kind of questions do they ask for a LEO polygraph? I'll be doing one in a year or so and I've always wondered if they ask really personal stuff or just your normal do you smoke crack, have you ever shoplifted, etc.

That is not correct. I dont mean to be argumentative. But, the question of their reliability in measuring galvanic skin response, heart rate, respiratory rate, are ALL VERY ACCURATE.

Just like a heart monitor at a hospital. These physical measures are accurate. Almost 100% accurate in MEASURING.

BUT, the fallability of the polygraph comes with the control and base line questions and the interpretation of the answers according to the accurate measurements.

So, again the measurement of the responses by the polygraph is very accurate. But the interpretation of the measures according to the question is what may lead to a conclusive outcome or an inconclusive outcome.

Meaning, if they cannot establish that you are clearly reacting a certian way to the control questions and they conclude the the test is "inconclusive", well then it's not valid.

This is where there is "innaccuracy" in the testing. Not in the measure, which is like any sort of measuring device. Pretty darn accurate, but in the interpretation of the responses of those measures.

If they cannot conclude either way, that you're a stinkin' liar of a by the book saint, then the test is inconclusive and invalidated.
