Secondary / remote automatic transmission filter install

Pretty straightforward. Used a Trandapt brand remote filter mount. Went with the typical TRD 4 liter engine oil filter. The filter assembly is mounted to the right side front suspension brace. Everything is well protected and there is no clearance issue with the sway bar at full extension.

Scary part was how nasty looking the fluid was at 22000 miles. This mod will make a full tranny flush much easier by disconnecting the hose at the filter housing.

Does it have to be mounted that low? Seems like that filter is exposed to dam near anything on the road (or off).

 

No it can be mounted anywhere you prefer that it fits. Merely a matter of getting longer hose to connect it.

FWIW, you do realize the photos are taken with the skid plate removed. The piece it is mounted to is a frame support. The hose route is oem Toyota. While anything is possible, and this is not a race truck where it would be better higher and aft, along with the transmission cooler, if this location has the filter in trouble, the radiator and the transmission cooling lines are less protected.

From what I read here, these transmissions do not have a fiberous filter to capture dirt. They do have a screen.

One of the easiest cars to work on was a Mitsubishi I bought for my daughter. It had from oem a spin on transmission filter. Also, any industrial hydraulic systems and aircraft systems use fiberous filters.

A few days ago, the truck had 22700 miles on it, no towing or hard driving. Changed the transmission fluid by using the flush method here. already the fluid was turning brownish. I installed this filter and drove a few hundred miles before changing the fluid. Time will tell if it's a good move, cost wise it was less than $50 to install the added filter.

Fluid wise, I did some homework, and while not approved by Mobil, I went with Mobil 1 ATF. I compared spec sheets and MSDS of approved fluids to the Mobil 1. The truck shifts better and the gear selector is less notchty feeling.

I like your idea. I think I will look into a possible mounting location in the engine compartment fender well. I would be able to use the lines going to an auxiallary transmission cooler as a way to hook the filter up. Do you know the Trans Adaptor model number that you used?

 

Is there any concern about drop in trany fluid pressure?

 

As for the Transdapt part number, no I don't know the exact PN. You should get one with the 3/4" thread size for the filter. The threaded ports were fairly large, I believe 1/2 NPT. I may change to a smaller ports size like 3/8 or even 1/4 NPT.

Transdapt makes remote oil filter adapters as do other companies. I went into the parts store inquiring about ordering one. The manager says we have an entire small block Chevy oil filter relocation kit. Originally this kit was probably $50, he says, how about $15 and it can be good for both of us. Done.

I picked up the hose & fittings at a local hydraulic shop. I used oem hose clamps from Toyota.

Yes this can or could be installed in conjunction with an aftermarket trans cooler. My prerunner came from Toyota with a towing package which included a transmission cooler.

As I mentioned, I also switched over from Toyota WS fluid to Mobil 1 ATF. The truck drives no different.

I did setup the Scangage II using the codes from the Scangage website. I did find additional codes on TW. Currently the Scangage is showing the trans fluid temp in the pan and the torque converter fluid temp.

As for the question about a pressure drop in the transmission, the oem cooler and this added filter are in the fluid return line back to the pan. That circuit is after the work has been accomplished, therefore pressure should be virtually none. Adding the filter may have raised it slightly.

PMK, with the filter relocation does the screen internally that the truck comes with require service still?

 

In theory no. The filter is capturing all the returned fluid that ultimately ends up in the pan.

The oem filter then is there for any failures where parts fall into the pan or maybe a careless filling will introduce stuff.
