Hello everyone I have a 2012 tacoma sport. I have 2100 miles on the truck and the other day I stepped on the gas like the other truck I had and I was not expecting the pedal to go to the floor. It went into red line and I just want to make sure that it is not going to hurt anything in the engine. Hoping someone could give me some reinsurance.

It's not GOOD for it... don't make it a habit, but the rev limiter protected the engine. If it didn't cause any immediate damage, the engine is fine... you may have taken 20k off of the life of the engine.

Why would you floor the gas with the trans in neutral or the clutch pressed?

You have an automatic. The ECU sensed you had pressed the gas pedal quickly, and used the aggressive shift map to upshift near redline to get the best acceleration (which you may need to pass safely). No engine damage.

So instead of lasting 300,000 miles, it may crap out at 280,000 miles. Why do you care? The frame will probably rust out first anyway. (Or in my case, ATRAC stops working...)

I'm thinking long term... but I'm also talking a free rev.
2100 miles... it's a fairly new "tight" engine.
I assumed he was at idle in neutral and "revved" it... not under load.

Driving in gear, I agree 1000%, no problem at all.

New, "tight" engine out of gear freely revved to redline?

Ya... in 300k it might show the effect ;)
