Unfortunately quite common on the '04 4R, less so on the '05 4R and taco, but still way too often for a toyo. They even changed the part number for the HG, basically acknowledging an problem, but won't issue a TSB/recall.

Yup, have everything off of the front, going to pull the valve covers tomorrow and hopefully get all the way down to the heads and get them off as well, then machined next week. So far not too bad, just a shit ton of nut and bolts.

Yup, been doing that as well as putting everything that is removed in a numbered baggy.

Right? It's good to know you can count on your friends for useful help.

    Almost, almost.

Well, today was much less productive than I had hoped. Turns out crank bolts are notoriously hard to break lose, and mine proved no different. I spent probably 5 hours trying all sorts of things; running to the auto store, Ace, scouring the internet and fabricating a cool looking, but worthless device, to hold the god damn pulley still while trying to break the bolt loose. Eventually, what tuned out to be the absolute easiest and least complicated method worked awesome.

I threaded two bolts through the pulley's threaded holes, and bottomed them out into to the engine cover (probably not the recommended procedure, but by god it worked) and then 4 feet of cheater bar and she popped right off.

Ended the day with the valve covers and timing chain cover off, ready to pull the chains, camshafts and then head bolts, which should go pretty quickly. Not my pic, but this is what my engine currently looks like, mine looks MUCH better in terms of residue which makes me feel pretty good about the condition of everything other than the HG in the motor.

Laziness of pulling SD card, photobucket etc., my photos are just for backup and hopefully won't be needed. Copy paste a URL is much easier :D

    LOL.

Heads are off and at the machine shop. Getting them cleaned, mating surface milled and having them install the new valve seals that came with the gasket kit as well. Everything looks top notch in the motor, other than the carbon build up on the misfiring cylinder.

Hell, did you price up rebuilding the heads entirely? Valves, springs, guides, etc.

Its going to be $150 for the clean, machine and install the valve seals, just the seals, I don't have any other parts to be installed in there ;)

A full valve job was over $1000. Dude commented on how great everything looked for a motor with 170K on it, so I feel pretty good about what is going to be worked on and what isn't/doesn't need it.

Yup, heads should be done tomorrow or Friday, and I just picked up the last items needed from the dealer: PFIG, oil filters, coolant and plugs. Everything else has been on hand for awhile.
