99 toyota 4runner rear end noise

99 4runner rear end make noise when you let off the throttle

 

could be a number of things, any more info
where in nc

check your u joints first, its not normal

 

i have they look good. Its like a growl when you let off the gas but its quiet when you have you foot on the gas.

 

have you checked the pinion bearing, carrier bearing in the d shaft or the gears themselves?

 

no i just checked the uv joints and the carrier bearing they had no play good and tight. is it hard to change the pinion bearing

 

sorta kinda, i wouldnt do it unless youre 100% confident in your wrenching skills

 

i just checked again u can move the pinion up and down plus side to side i think that might be it. thanks for your help

 

Yes it should not move like that(it shouldn't move at all). Has the pinion but backed off at all? There shouldn't be that much slop without something coming loose.

Yes, its possible, if it came loose its probably too late to just tighten it up though. Sounds like you gonna need a diff rebuild. Depending on what gear you have might be cheaper to find another third member.

 

Call the number at WWW.eastcoastgearsupply.com and get a diff. From there if you need a new one, they're the best in the business

I had a noise in my '01 like what you describe. Iput it on 4 jackstands and crawled under it with an engine stethescope. Once I touched the pinion bearing area with the scope I heard he growl immediately. Needed a pinion bearing. Fortunately Ihad the means to rebuilt the centersection myself. I put all new bearing races and seals in that bad boy. I think it was around $250?, for all the parts if Iremember correctly. But that's been a while ago so I could be off on the parts number.

At any rate, check the wheel bearings, and work your way in to the center section and possibly U joints.
