99 4Runner 5sp 4x4 with 2.7 MPG ???

Hey Ya'll

WOW its been a long time. I sold my 04 tacoma prerunner awhile back and now have a 99 4Runner. And I recently changed the plugs at 130k miles and believe they was the originals. Anyway, my mpg went from mid 17's avg to 15.8 the last 2 tanks. Feels like its running fine but all the sudden the mpg dropped. Yes I used NGk's. Like I said this is a new vehicle to us, well we've had it several months and the mileage has been around that 17 mark. Since we've had it haven't been able to get over 20 on highway trips running 70.
I got in my old 04 tacoma prerunner with the 3.4 v6 auto 19 avg and about 16 city and got up to about 22 highway. I guess I kinda thought the 2.7 would get better especially reading so many guys having good mpg with theirs.
So I quess just curious if this is about right. Everyting is stock on the truck so not dealing with a lift or oversized tires. Just our family vehicle. Anyway just curious on some of your thoughts.

Thanks

Tim

Well I guess I'll converse with myself. Just filled the 4runner up and it was at a half tank with about 176 miles. Took 8.61 gals equalling 20.4 mpg. Kinda crazy cuz it makes the same type runs every week. I quess just curious how it takes the ecm to make the adjustments after new plugs and stuff over 2 tanks of gas. If that is indeed what has happened.
Last night I put in a new air filter did the elbow mod and put in a new pcv valve. So will update the results in about a week or so if anybody is curious.

Well here is the update. Went 270 miles and the low fuel light came on. Took 14.555 gallons equalling 18.6 mpg. So if anybody is following this my fuel mileage has gone from 15.8 to 20.4 all pretty much stop and go driving and only about 2 miles from home to work. We have a big drip from KC,MO to Dallas in a couple weeks so real curious what that mpg will be. All interstate and I'll probably set the cruise at about 72. Which is gonna put my RPM just under 3k. I'll be surprised if I get 21 or 22.
So feel free to throw in your .02.

The 4runner is somewhat heavier than the Tacoma, so you are in the ball park. Toyotas aren't know for good MPG. My Tacoma, overall is around 22 mpg.

Changing fluids might help a bit (oil, tranny, TC).

60-65 mph is the optimum cruising speed for best mpg. The choice is yours.

tan4x4, thanks for the response. I guess I never thought about the weight being different. I was thinking maybe the SUV would be more aerodynamic compared to a truck. Maybe not. And then with the higher RPM at interstate speeds kinda kills the mpg too.
I do need to change the diff fluids but kinda have to do a little at a time.
